Once Upon a Time: “It's Not Easy Being Green” (1.16) Thoughts

Apr 13, 2014 18:21

This is the sixteenth episode of season three and was written by Andrew Chambliss. This episode focused a lot on Zelena aka the Wicked Witch of the West and her backstory.

I seriously don’t have a lot to say about this episode. It’s my understanding that critics and fans adored it, but I believe myself to be on the other end of things. I didn’t ( Read more... )

It's not just you! I think I was over the WW arc almost as soon as it began, frankly. It's garish and cringe-inducing. I wanted to like RM, but eh, it's just corny and everything is overdone as you say.

It's especially jarring when it is right beside the hauntingly poignant scenes with Rumple. Only Belle is tuned into the agony he is going through :_( and yes, I am with you on them being shafted, and I'm well and truly over it.

I really wanted to like the WW arc. I actually thought there were several places they could have gone with the story. I should have known better after the insanity that was the Neverland arc. I was over it by the second episode - a lot of the story is just cringe-worthy. Plus, it felt/feels like half the characters took stupid pills during their missing year. I enjoyed RM on LOST, but I feel as if she was miscasted here ( ... )

I truly believe that RM was miscast in the role. I've liked her in other things, but she is just not working here. And her cheesy dialog and been-there-done-that motives don't help matters at all.

I think the writers are just pushing the parallel with Regina into campy. Zelena's dialogue echoes Regina's. R: I'll give you this happy happy day. Z: I'll give you this sad, sad, day. Regina is basically getting a taste of her own medicine. Same with Rumple. Lost his son and powerless against his own dagger. My problem isn't his being controlled, because structurally, that was only a matter of time. My problem is their doing it AFTER his death, so it's anti-climactic and angst-ridden. That's a weird combination.

I loved loved that Walsh is the Wizard of Oz. I think it’s a great addition to the story. Frankly, I adore Christopher Gorham in the role. He came across as bit of a cad, that’s trying to do good for others. .. but is also interested in helping himself. If they ever do a Once Upon a Time in Oz mini-series, Christopher Gorham ( ... )

Regina is basically getting a taste of her own medicine.

My problem with that is that they've already done several 'Regina sees the other side of things' stories with Regina, both in current times and in flashbacks. It just feels overdone, especially as Regina always reverts back to her old ways or always loses. I want them to do more with the character, but honestly she doesn't seem that important to Zelena's story. It looks more like Zelena just wants Regina to disappear and that she considers Emma the real threat.

With Rumple, I feel like they don't know what to do with him. He's either being manipulative/evil or angsting. There is no real middle ground with him. It's no wonder RC keeps asking for weeks off to do other projects. I have no problem with them using the dagger and having him be controlled, but it doesn't fit with the overall story.

I actually won't want a full spin-off. I'd rather an 11-13 episode mini-series like Once Upon a Time in Wonderland - they seem to do better with smaller casts and tighter stories. If ( ... )

I'm not liking Zelena and her story either. And I think the acting is a lot of it; her dialog isn't exactly the best but the acting kicks it into really...not-great-to-watch territory.

I think there is so major overacting going on with RM aka Zelena. There has been cheesy dialog and over the top monologues on this show before. However, I can usually get past it or it works in a weird way. But, with this character? Zelena's acting/line delivery/motives just makes me want to turn away. It's Cora 3.0 or Pan 2.0 (He was Cora 2.0, at least to me.) I truly believe that RM was miscast in the role. I've liked her in other things, but she is just not working here. And her cheesy dialog and been-there-done-that motives don't help matters at all.
