Period Dramas

My older sister came for a visit this last week. She's kept my mother and I rather busy. She's got a rather demanding personality and when we don't stop everything and cater to her. . .well, she tends to pout and tell us: "You don't love me. Nobody loves me." Frankly it's sometimes easier to give in than fight; especially as she's certainly ( Read more... )

I would highly recomment the recent adaptations of Jane Austen's novels that PBS did. Most of them, anyway. Their "Mansfield Park" wasn't so good. The one from the 90s is definitely much better.

The 1995 "Sense and Sensibility" is also lovely, and the 2007 PBS version was pretty well done too. I know everyone loves the 1990s "Pride and Prejudice," but I really love the 2005 one. It's not as close to the book as the other one, but I feel that it captures the overall tone and feeling of the novel much better.

Best one I've seen in years is the 2007 version of "Persuasion." It's just lovely.

I've actually seen all your recs! I would agree that the 1995 "Sense and Sensibility" is well done; I like it better than the 2007 one. I also prefer the 1990s "Mansfield Park". I'm actually not a big "Pride and Prejudice" fan, but I think each version has something to offer. "Persuasion" from 2007 was really well done.

Have you seen any of the "Jane Eyre" films/minis? A lot of people don't care for it, but I have a fondest for the newest version.

I haven't seen any of the films, but it's just because I don't care much for the book. Films look quite well done though.

Have you seen "Little Dorrit?" PBS did a run of Charles Dickens movies a few years back and it was just fantastic.

I'm not huge on the book either. I like the film, though.

I've seen "Little Dorrit". I liked it well enough, but didn't love it. But than. . .I'm not a huge Dickens fan.
