Blair answered the phone without a thought. That lack of thought turned into an almost blindness. He raced to the hospital, not caring whom he ran down in the process.
Sneakers slapping on the tile floors, he skittered to a stop at the nurse's station. "Jim. Ellison. Officer. Where?"
Jim was 'resting'. He was lying on the bed, ribs strapped in a compression bandage and eyes heavy lidded and unfocused. Simon sat in the corner chewing his cigar.
Megan was running diversion on the doctor until Blair arrived.
Simon waved. "He took a shot in the chest. Kevlar saved his life... and mine. He hit the hood of the car and didn't get up again. I should ban the two of you from public and watch the crime rate of the city plummet.
"Get him awake before that doctor gets in." He stood and headed for the door. "We'll give you five minutes. He was awake when you got here if they ask."

And how sad was it that the nurses knew them?

Panting he tried to look calm as he came around the curtain.
"Uhmmm, what did you do now,' he asked, trying to look and sound nonchalant. He utterly failed for obvious reasons.

Jim didn't show any signs of reacting.
