DEPLOYMENT 3: Basic Training 101

[Back on the 20th, the Postman delivered to Balin his AFS physical training uniform and some of his other Recruit gear, except for the sidearm and its holster. Which is just fine for Balin! He'd prefer the uniform over gimpy Fifties attire anyway.]

-Virginia happens to be on her morning trot with Quicksilver. Both her and the horse seem to be surprised to see him.-

[Balin gets up from his most recent set of pushups, heaving a sigh of exhaustion as he does.]

Yo-yeah, better to do PT in'a mornin' when it ain't as hot.

[This is actually the first time Balin has seen Quicksilver, although Caesar had mentioned it. He looks a bit surprised as well!]

Whoa. Caesar ain't kiddin' 'bout'a horse!

Eyup. She's my pride and joy, this one. -Virginia beams. And... so does the horse. Kind of.-

[Balin nods. Being a Philidelphian, horses in the street aren't too unfamiliar of a sight, what with carriage companies in the city ... but it'd been a while since he'd even seen a horse, so he can't help but be a little surprised to see one here.]

[Especially seeing one grin! Hadn't seen a horse do that before.]

You own more'n one horse at home?

[Gil is always out too. NEVER GOING TO MISS SOMETHING LIKE THIS.]

Why are you working so hard?

[Balin slows down to a stop when he hears Gil's question, putting one hand on a nearby tree.]

Gotta keep in shape; my body's a weapon, like everything else.

[Balin looks over more directly at Gil. Now he recognizes him from a few nights ago.]

Hey, you're Gilgamesh, aren't you? ... Damn you got some red eyes.

But if you overdo it, you'll be weak.

That's me. Is red eyes surprising?

[Balin shrugs, chatting it up despite still being a bit out of breath.]

We did morning PT every day at bootcamp, but that's just the basics. Since us Receptives are like'a AFS special forces, they really worked us over in'a first part-like pushed us to our physical an' mental limits in'a first phase of training.

[He smirks a little.]

Like my drill sergeant said, "the Bane are goin'a eat you up an' spit you out, an' my job is to make sure that you taste as badly as possible. Zero fat!"

But for'em red eyes you got? It's kinda surprisin', yeah. Only time I've ever seen humans with red eyes is with contact lenses.

[Yuri's noticed Balin around the construction site before - just, he never bothered this particular fellow construction worker. Mostly on account of town shenanigans, Yuri slacking off, and mun being MIA general antisocial bone-headedness.]

[Today, however, Yuri's in a good mood. Which means he's in the mood to be a nuisance. Balin, you've got a coworker shadowing you and matching your routine now. Not saying anything, yet. Just mimicking.]

[Balin doesn't initially notice, but after a street or two he starts picking up on the sound of someone running behind him, stopping whenever he does. So the next time he stops to do another set of pushups, he instead turns around.]

Yo, what's up?

Not much. Recognized you n'was wondering where the fire was.

[Beat.]

In afterthought, I shoulda realized there wasn't a fire after the first set of push-ups. Figured I'd hang around n'chat anyway.

[That gets a snicker out of Balin, despite being slightly winded.]

Yeah, no fires, just doin' mornin' PT.

[Speaking of which, now that he's looking at Yuri, this guy seems familiar!]

Say ... you from'a construction site? Think I've seen ya around'ere.

[ Have an eight and a half foot tall armored giant watch you carefully as you run. Well... and have him cross over to you, actually. ]

Good morning, ser. Undertaking physical training then?

[ Having not met Balin in person, Garviel is in for a surprise. ]

Is Garviel's voice recognizable through the vox-caster thingy?

[And so is Balin! The sight of an Astartes wearing his full suit of power armor is enough to make Balin slow down to a stop as Garviel approaches. Balin definitely looks impressed!]

Whoa ... That's some hardcore armor you got there.

[Balin sounds slightly winded from his morning run, but not too much.]

But yeah-figure if I'm gonna be stuck here in Mayfield, I better keep in shape. No tellin' if or when I'll wind up back on'a front lines.

[A beat.]

And besides, this town's dangerous enough'a warrant keepin' squared away.

[ He nods ]

This town is extremely dangerous, on both a moral and physical level. Don't let it corrupt you.

I hear'at. Been workin' on gatherin' information involvin'a "spring culling" incident from a while back. Ultimately I wanna know who all got involved in'at, so I'll know who's got some screws loose.

[Then it dawns on him. This voice is familiar.]

Say-you that Garviel Loken guy? From back when they were usin' at truth gas on us?

[ A tiny girl is watching you from the rooftops of several houses, jumping along and bounding from roof to roof, keeping pace with you. ]

[Balin doesn't immediately notice when Shana starts mimicking his routine on the "high road," although eventually the sound of someone running and jumping across the rooftops gets his attention.]

[He glances over as he slows down to a stop and calls out to Shana, winded from his exercise regime.]

Heh-Tryin'a show me up, eh?

What do you think? [ She's got a thin sheen of sweat as well, and is wearing a dark black cloak over those silly dowdy female teeny bopper clothes. ]
