I grew up with guns so using them is natural to me. I understand when to use them and when not to and how they should be used. It's not the guns themselves which are dangerous but the fact that people don't treat them seriously and don't learn to use them properly.
You should learn to use that gun. I'd suggest every woman do so. Far more effective than pepper spray or any other defense.
Thing is, with a gun any time I draw it and cock the hammer I mean business. I have never threatened anyone with a gun because if it's loaded that means stop what you're doing or I WILL kill you.
Practice, practice, though a shotgun preferable double barrelled, I think is better for protection of a woman at home alone because it scatters hitting wider area and take less aim. Just point it in the general direction. The more evil it looks, the better.
I grew up with guns, both for hunting and self defense. The first gun I regularly used was the muzzle loader my family brought out with them on the wagon train. The second was the Colt .44 which had belonged to a distant cousin who had been a Ranger ( BTW, the Colt is authenticated and still in working order last I saw it; the family retains both guns).
On the ranch I used a Winchester rifle or a 12 gage.
I am still a good marksman, the only one in the family aside from Dee who can accurately shoot the revolver and reload if needed. I hit my target dead center nearly ever shot. We do now own a 41o shotgun but my joints have deteriorated too much for me to shoot it; I can no longer absorb the recoil. I stick with the revolver because I know I can get the shot in. When there's more money, however, I do plan on buying a Beretta and getting my concealed carry permit...but only if I can find one with a wood grip. I hate plastic!
The song amuses the heck out of me; have you ever seen the video for it? The look on the posse's faces when they see what Ol' Red is doing is priceless!
Our hounds are better trained; there aren't actually many police units, in spite of what you see on television, who have sniffer trained tracking animals...but we do. It was a joy to hear them work.

What a story.
If I lived in a rural area, I'd learn to use the gun my husband keeps. Oddly, I feel safer in the city than I would living where you are.
