Brigit's Flame Week 2 - Quixotic

Mar 14, 2010 18:55

o/` "On the first part of the journey,
I was looking at all the life.
There were plants and birds. and rocks and things,
There was sand and hills and rings.
The first thing I met, was a fly with a buzz,
And the sky, with no clouds.
The heat was hot, and the ground was dry,
But the air was full of sound. " o/`

Well if you want the reader to be really really annoyed with "Lauren" as well, you've succeeded!

Yes, that is the intent. Like her namesake, she's a grandiose dreamer with no direction and an overwhelming sense of self-importance.

That gets knocked out of her later, but that's not part of this particular entry.

If you've ever read any of TE Lawrence, you'll know what I'm talking about. The man was almost insufferable at times.

This was amazingly written. O.o

Lauren seems like she is an annoying daydreaming ditz who needs knocked into shape, but that seems to just be her character.

I enjoy reading your writing. :-)

Just who and what Lauren is is not readily apparent in this piece, but it's something I've got developed down the road. I do not know if I will have the courage to post the whole thing, as it's rather personal as well as containing elements of a genre I have never written and swore I would not write, but we'll see what happens. She is, however, modeled off of young TE Lawrence as described by so many of his biographers. I will say she's in for some surprises. A Victorian code of chivalry in a modern world rarely works out well.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.

This was enchanting-- but then again, I found Lawrence's books to be magical, and the idea of someone taking such an idealism and wrapping her whole personality around it to absorb it, make it her own.. well, it appeals.

And I'm absolutely amused at the O'Tool connection in more ways than one. As a result from reading this piece, I'm humming "It is I Don Quixote".

Now it'll never get out of my head. I hope you're happy. /tries to be stern but fails miserably.

I had never tried writing something which was tied to a historical personage and I thought I might give it a go. In addition to Seven Pillars and his other writings, I've also read several reputable biographies and it is from that which I've drawn the quixotic character ( ... )

I cringe when I anticipate what is awaiting Lauren. Well written!

Thank you.

The piece is partially based on the idea that someone would have embraced TE Lawrence's ideals and made them her own or perhaps on reincarnation into modern times (I have not decided). That she's in for some harsh surprises I don't deny.

Well, on the other hand, you never know, she may wind up being right. :D

I think, from the way the story is shaping up in my head, that it's more likely to have a "won the battle, which was the important thing, but not the ware" type of setting.

I just might continue this in other entries, it has potential.
