I try. My health doesn't always permit me to keep a good writing schedule so I often have to drop out in the second week even though I made the cut. Hopefully that's not the case this time.
Yeah, I've become a hard-core birder. The husband has gotten used to me waking up and whining, "Awww, it doesn't COUNT, damnit!" or to making sudden hard turns and detours because I saw a bird that I might not have.
I don't know whether I'd prefer the bird to remain largely unverified or to be documented. Both have advantages and disadvantages.
I think this is the first I've read of you, and I have to say you brought did a lovely job of peaking my interest in the subject of birding! Your imagery is well done, and I really like how the narrator thinks of the birds she spies as having unique personalities. Her realization brought more interest in the hobby for her and for the read to me :D Nice job!
I've written one or two other pieces but always had to bow out early because of my health. I'm hoping to go to the finish this time, or at least as far as the vote takes me.
My husband cannot remember the names of the birds so we have 'stooge doves' (named for the sound they make when taking off), 'toastee birds (because their undersides are the color of a beautifully done piece of toasted bread), and football birds (quail). I don't get out much so I spend a lot of time making friends at the feeder and listening to them.
This was a very interesting read! While not an avid birdwatcher myself, I do enjoy observing and identifying the many different types that frequent our backyard and nearby park. It was fascinating to learn more about the hobby, and that last bit about the woodpecker surprising you at the window had me laughing out loud :D
I wasn't terribly interested at first until I realized that there are a lot of birds which fly through Florida at various times in their life cycles. The egrets are my favorite; I go out to a sanctuary to watch them nest and they look just like a Japanese painting.
Thank you! I'm always uncertain about hyphenation when it comes to the descriptions of birds. There isn't, in fact, much more to the story. We can still hear the birds but have never been able to photograph one credibly. They're incredibly fast, flighty things which would account for the reason no one else has been able to do so either.
The piece was rushed, so there are other parts which could have been expanded, but I wanted to avoid doing too much as I've spoken about the Lord God Bird here before.

I usually do my edits in web page format, as it gives me much more freedom. Hope this helps!
