They both sleep in New Year’s Day, along with the rest of humanity. Jensen hears Jared pounding downstairs to feed the dogs around ten, three hours after they normally eat. Jensen's asleep again before the food hits their bowls, but he bets Jared never makes it back upstairs, that he collapses on the couch after deciding stairs are too much effort.

Jensen doesn’t actually make it out of his room until two, and if he’s honest with himself, the last two hours of that are really just him hiding. He really doesn’t want to have the conversation with Jared where Jared blames the kiss, or the wanting to kiss, on all the alcohol consumed.

Turns out he needn’t have bothered, because the first thing Jared says is, "Did we even watch the ball drop? I don’t remember much after the everlasting gobstopper."

Jensen can’t tell if he’s hurt or relieved. "Yeah, we watched the ball drop."

"Awesome." Jared still prone on the couch, and he slips a hand under his shirt to scratch his belly. "So what are we doing today?"

Jensen wonders what that patch of skin feels like, tastes like, and then he looks away from Jared’s hand splayed across his own skin, to the pear tree still in the corner. "I was thinking we could go for a walk in the park. With the dogs," he hastens to add, when Jared cocks an eyebrow at him.

Jared laughs. "Sure."

They pile into Jensen’s car, because Jensen wants to choose the park. He spent an entire day last week driving to all the bodies of water in the immediate area (and some that were not so immediate) looking for swans, until he finally found this place.

"Does this one meet your ever so exacting standards?" Jared asks when he parks.

"What?"

"We passed, like, three parks to get to this one."

"The dogs wanted a change of scenery."

"What, they told you that?"

Jensen looks back at Sadie and Harley in the back seat. Honestly, he’s pretty sure they couldn’t care less. "Yep, they did."

Jared gets out of the front and opens the back door to let the dogs out. "I’m sorry," he says to them, "I didn’t know I was boring you."

Jensen takes Harley’s leash and sets off down the trail. The pond is around the back half of the park, away from the road. Harley smells it before Jensen sees it, and in a move Jensen should have anticipated but didn’t, Harley takes off running, jerking the leash out of Jensen’s hand hard enough that he falls to the ground, ripping a hole in the knee of his jeans. Jared takes off after him, still leading Sadie on her leash. Jensen sees the swans as they take flight, away in the distance, and thinks it’s probably too much effort to even point them out to Jared.

"Well, that could have gone better," he mutters to himself.

Harley’s soaking wet from jumping into the pond after the swans when Jensen catches up with them. Jared’s standing on the edge of the pond, calling for him, but he’s watching the tail end of the line of swans heading off away from them. “Did you see those swans?” he asks.

"Yeah," Jensen says. He wishes he’d thought this particular day through better, but it’s too late now. "Pretty cool."

Harley splashes both of them on his way out of the pond, shaking the water off as he comes. He collapses at Jensen’s feet, all over his shoes and the bottom of his newly ripped jeans, legs stuck up like he’s asking for his wet belly to be rubbed. "Forget it," Jensen tells him, and picks up the soggy leash instead.
