[ master post]

This is where the magic happens.

Most people will come in through Milliways and exit out the cargo bay to go have some fun. But some might need to take detours. And of course, some people live here.

Some people work here, too -- especially if they're working on repairs.

Chur walks through with a large brown sack that holds her burqa (a heavy, totally-concealing blue one), boots, and gloves. The translator's in the sack, too, something she only notices when she says, "«Hnn, not quite what I expected,»" and realizes that it came out in the pidgin, not in a human language.

"Susannah," she says. "Toren, these days. Did Rose introduce herself?"

Chur shakes her head like a human might. "Ker Rose did not," she says, and somehow her tone as she says it is picked up by the translator so that she really does sound like the old lady she's claiming to be - and since 'rose' is a word, too, the translator repeats it. "Good to meet you, ker Susannah." The translator doesn't try for that, but 's' and 'n' are sounds Chur can make, so it's a decent approximation.

Cue more squirming. "Sorry," Rose says. "Pleased to meet you."

Chur bows slightly. "Pleased to meet you, ker Rose," she says, and then pulls an enormous shapeless blob of light blue cloth out of the sack. It's her "concealing clothing", apparently.

"So you're not from around here?" Rose asks. "I mean--not this universe?"

Or are aliens just unwelcome on this planet?

"Correct," Chur agrees, shaking the blob out and trying to find the bottom. "As far as I know there are only humans here, so I will be a poor widow who may not reveal herself to anyone not within the fifth degree of consanguinity," she says, obviously pleased with herself.

"Oh, I thought--" Rose glances at her mother, and Susannah smiles.

"Spaceships and nonhumans from other planets," Susannah explains, "tend to go together in our fiction. Easy mistake to make."

Chur nods gravely and then struggles into her burqa, occasionally cursing in hani, which the translator primly refuses to relate. Finally she's gotten it more or less arranged, and looks down at herself.

"I look like a water ghost," she says, amused.

"What's a water ghost?"

Chur gestures at her blue-draped form. "The ghost of someone who drowned?" she offers, through the translator. "Not that they're real, but in plays they look much like this."

River, perched atop a pile of crates with her heels idly swinging, blinks at Chur.

"Redirect the settings," she advises helpfully.

Chur gives River a 'of course' sort of look, ears back a bit, and says, "«Should have put it on before walking through,»" while fishing out the translator.

"Better?" she asks, static masking the growls of the pidgin, once the earpiece is in and the box is turned on. "Is the «pidgin» masked enough to fool those I meet?"

"You're very staticky."

Beat.

"Okay."

"It was that or have them wondering why someone claiming an inability to speak was growling along with the voice-box," Chur points out cheerfully, putting on her boots and gloves.

"Sometimes," River says, which is presumably agreement.

She pushes herself off the crate in a slow slide, though it's only a few inches' drop to stand on the crate below.
