2. Reducing certain characters down to essential traits help recognition. Ie. Sora has blue eyes, spiky hair, is a ADHD poster child. These don't change unless significant things happen in the story, such as death or injury. In general, relationships remain the same -- ie. Ranma & Akane, or Miaka meets her seven seishi again in a school setting, or the Saiyuki gang are always drawn together -- it's always Sanzo, Goku, Gojyo and Hakkai, party of four. I admit it's like signposts -- people are like heeey, something familiar and they're more or less willing to believe that this is really SanzoGokuGojyoHakkai, even if it's an AU where they're all cats.
