Cameras. Again.
Tommy's gotten kind of sick of the cameras over the past few weeks - this touring DVD is turning out to be more of a hassle than he really thinks its worth. He's so sick of not knowing when the camera-man is going to pop up, trying to catch bits of behind the scenes footage. He's sick of having to play 'just friends' with Adam because they can't afford to get caught in a compromising moment. Today though, Tommy's just plain sick.
He'd been running a high fever through the entire night and well into that morning, but they couldn't cancel the show, not last minute like this. There was no way in Hell he planned to let the others go on without him either, so he swallowed a few Tylenol Cold pills and vitamin c tablets in the hopes that they'd at least do something and forced himself out of bed with just enough time to pull on a clean set of clothes before being ushered out to the car that was taking them from the hotel to the venue.
He was shivering despite the fever and somewhere along the way he'd ended up being forced into Adam's sweater, which he was still pulled tight around him as he unsteadily approached the sofa that the younger man was sitting on while he chatted away with the woman - Danielle, he thinks her name is - interviewing him. He didn't really give a damn about the camera right now which was probably a bad idea, but all he could concentrate on was the fact that he felt like shit and would really appreciate some TLC from his boyfriend right at the moment. Fuck their interviews and DVDs.
Tommy sits down on the couch, immediately curling in towards Adam's side while letting out a low whimper he hopes the camera's voice-recorder didn't catch and Adam sighs and glances down at him sadly before looking back up at the camera.
"Here's another misconception about touring." He nodded towards Tommy's fairly limp body, "It isn’t all fun and games - the majority of it is, yes - but not all." He slips an arm loosely around Tommy's shoulders, rubbing his arm gently, "Shows aren't that easy to cancel and, well, late nights, tour buses, hotels and a lot of booze and take-out places aren't the makings of a really healthy lifestyle."
"But couldn't you just get a fill-in bassist for the night?" Tommy has to give Jason - the cameraman - a bit of credit for that one. He does sound genuinely concerned. Tommy still wishes he'd go away, though.
Adam sighs softly and gives a small shrug, "I could, yeah.."
"But I'm a stubborn asshole," Tommy finishes for him before venturing a look at the camera. He figures he probably looks like Hell but such is the life of a rock star’s sick bassist. "The tour wraps in a week and I haven't missed a show yet. I don't wanna start now." Adam makes a sound like he's going to protest - not for the first time that day - but Tommy looks up at him, eyelashes fluttering a little as he murmurs, "For the last time, Adam. I'll be fine."
Their eyes meet for a moment, neither of them speaks but it's obvious that some kind of communication is happening before Adam sighs in defeat and looks back towards Danielle. "You get close, living together on tour like this. There's just this bond that develops. It's kind of.. like family," he explains, trying to ignore the way Tommy's nuzzling against his neck, "It doesn't take much to get us worrying about each other."
The interview takes a turn in another direction and Tommy shuts his eyes and blocks it out, relaxing fully against Adam as he lets the sickness and exhaustion over-take him for a while. The way Adam's hand snakes up to soothingly run through his hair nearly puts him to sleep and he's pretty sure he lets out a content sigh that's counterproductive to the tough boy image he tries to portray. He tries to suppress a shiver but Adam feels it and his voice trails off as he gently tilts Tommy's face up so he can look at him.
There's a visible struggle showing on Adam's face as their eyes meet again and he knows how it'll come across on the video footage. He can't help it, though. All he wants to do is take care of the older man like a good boyfriend should but he's stuck giving him second rate comfort while a camera tries to dissect their relationship. He bites his bottom lip gently as Tommy's eyelids flutter again and they both wonder how he's going to keep them opened long enough to play the show later. Danielle and Jason share a knowing look just before Adam pulls the smaller man into his lap, hugging him to his chest as he rests his chin against the top of Tommy's head and slowly looks up to give the camera a look that silently tells it all.
He knows how some of the behind-the-scenes footage will be edited now, he knows that the people in charge of compiling it will shift through it looking for the moments between him and Tommy, put them together in a way that makes their relationship as obvious as possible. He can already hear the way comments they've made will be taken out of context. Anything to make it a good selling point, anything to expose this newly found gem of a story.
By all rights, he should be pissed - should demand that this segment be deleted - but mostly he's relieved. He likes the idea of not having to hide it anymore.
It's true, that your tour mates often become like your second family. Sometimes, though, there's more to it than that - and Adam thinks it’s time for the public to be let in on that one.
