Chrono Trigger would probably be a good game to let her borrow. It's not all that crazy for someone almost thirteen, and always seemed somewhat lighter than some of the other games from that time.
I kind of wouldn't recommend VII because it is fucking insane like you said, even with a strategy guide and spoilers. What about FFIX? I know a lot of people don't like it because of, well, lots of things, but the graphics aren't all that bad, and it's a fairly straight-forward game with a lot of light-hearted moments... X would also be a good game because it is a straight-forward game as well, with good graphics, and a somewhat good storyline. I think it would be a good starting point--it doesn't get as dark as some of the other FF games so long as you don't stop and think about it too much.
Just have to say, 358/2 Days is short because all they ever seem to do is eat ice cream and be bestest friends. That game is super frustrating, seriously.
My two personal favorites are X and IX. I never really finished any of the others, though, sooo who knows. (I really do need to play VII all the way through at some point.) Although I first played X when I was pretty young, and some parts of the story kind of went over my head. Thirteen Would probably be old enough, though.
I still haven't finished it. The plot bores me to death and I hate the battle system, so I probably never will. I might watch the cutscenes on youtube sometime.
I remember not getting any of the political stuff. Then again, I was like nine or ten. I also didn't understand how to use the sphere grid (I made my brother do it for me), which is kind of sad, considering how simple it is.

The only thing that's hard to understand is the Dream of the Fayth/Tidus' non-existence thing, and nobody understands that XD

Actually, I thought Chrono Cross was a little depressing haha. But maybe that's because the ending was so confusing...
