I would have thought that draining Willow's magic would be a little more difficult than that. Doesn't a spellcaster need to get weakened before you can drain them, as Giles was in Grave? Or aren't some defensive measures possible?

Otherwise, wouldn't any spellcaster on spellcaster combat begin with one simply draining the other to end the fight?

I'm guessing that Amy has some kind of super-powerful zombie betrayal magic that doesn't follow the normal rules.

I'd say it's less about normal rules, more about techniques and disciplines in magic with which Willow has no knowledge.

I would point out that, when it happened, Willow had just been on the receiving end of a pummeling from not-Michelle.

That being said, Amy caught Willow off guard while Willow was gathering power for a massive offensive spell. Any defensive measures she might have had were being disregarded for the attack.

That made me feel pain. Or it could be the hour long aerobic dance class I just took, but that pain is resonating with Buffy's.

Amy bad - Willow, contemplating bad. Things could get messy (messier) soon.

In this story, much as with Xander in Sparrow, we're seeing the way these characters change in a bad environment that doesn't also have the resonance of home. Their separation, both over the previous year and the more thematic separation they're dealing with now, is having a notably negative impact on the way they cope.
