Fanfic writing advice comms?

Apr 17, 2007 09:32

confettiofstars is looking for non-fandom specific comms to ask fanfic writing advice. I'm not coming up with any ideas myself. fanficpen is for more stylistic stuff like grammar and tone and etc, right? onedeadbunny is more about getting those pesky plotbunnies cleaned out from wherever they've been hiding. canon_details is for asking those niggling questions about canon. Anyone have

writing, fanfiction

Well, fanficpen's been pretty quiet, so I think we could handle something other than grammar. What kind of advice are we talking about? Really, I think the comm's for anything about writing.

It's a little unclear from the userinfo. That's why I asked. I'm not sure what she needs advice on. I know she's in the plotting and planning stage at this point, so the questions may be more towards characterization.

I'd say (as a mod-type) that if she's looking for help in figuring out how to do proper characterization, she should definitely post on fanficpen. Heck, plotting and planning are topics we should address too :)

I guess I fail at Communication 101, since both you and jedicrysta have misunderstood what I'm asking. *sigh*

It's two things. One-- the thing you're asking here. I'd like a comm where I can ask more general questions. They're almost all worldbuilding problems, actually, not characterization issues. I'm essentially writing into the gaps, and trying to make snippets of very conflicting canon work together. (I particularly love where the main author of the canon conflicts with himself. In one comic, a historical character is raving about his "Dark Jedi blood" (read: human blood). In another, the *same person* is referred to as being "part of an elite priesthood of pure Sith blood" (read: Sith species, not carrying any of the human interbred bloodline). It obviously can't be both.) I feel that I need to have the backstory of both the people and my characters down before I can reasonably start writing. So there are things that are kind of general to Massive AU Projects or Writing Canon Bad Guys or other issues that I don't want to post to SW- ( ... )

There is a community for feedback on original characters, oc_analysis. That's the only one I've had any experience with. (After long frustration with unresponsive betas and widespread contempt of genfic, I gave up the whole idea of constructive criticism.)
