Listen to music, take a walk, draw/doodle, people watch.
I think those are my main inspirations. I find people watching is interesting. I was sat on a bench in my town, when a business man ran past, and I wondered what he was late for, before realising he might not be late, he might have other reasons to run. He might not even have been a business man, he was just in a suit.
I really don't have to do anything, sometimes just hearing a snippet of a talk between two strangers is enough. My problem is that I cant't write it down (well, I can in my own language, I'm just not eloquent enough in english). Maybe take a random character, and a random situation and start from there? Or do a drabble request thingie, lots of people on lj are/were doing that :)
A friend of mine gave me this advice (I'm not big on connecting music to writting, but this trick did work for me). Basically, you play a song (either randomly, or you choose one), and imagine what kind of person would be listening to it, where and why. You can do the same with a book, a place, an object etc... That could maybe get you to build a scene and hopefully get the story going. :)
I personally always write as a reaction to things (other written work, tv shows, social issues...). If I, for example, see something in a show that bugs me, I start thinking of how I'd do it 'better' and, somehow, a new idea usually emerges from that.
