Kronk's not the kind of guy who likes resting on his laurels, but today he's making notes for his class and can't decide what he's going to do for their next lesson, cancellations or not.

"Hey Don! Ice cream or mousse?" which he mispronounces as 'mouse', as he's got a bit of a deficit in his knowledge of French.

He doesn't find the notion of talking to a large green turtle who knows ninjitsu disturbing at all. Especially when they just had a debate about the ingredients in a can of Spam the other day.

Don is barely paying attention, continuing to scribble in his notebook. After a moment, he processes that he's been asked a question. He assumes that Kronk doesn't actually mean that he wants to cook mice for class... unless they have really weird cuisine in the Middle Kingdom.

"You mean mousse? As in the dessert and not an animal?" He chews on his lip, still concentrating on his notebook.

It's all right - he's half-buried in his own notes of frustrated confusion. If you plunked Kronk into the middle of a diner and told him to serve, he'd be able to rattle off a hundred names for a hundred different combinations of food and do it with a smile. But this French stuff!

He gives a quick nod. "I don't know why they don't call it creamy pudding. That'd cut out all the fancy stuff."

"It's French, so they keep the French name." Don glances up from his notes briefly, chewing on the tip of his pencil. "You can always ask around to see if anyone here's from France. It'd be interesting to hear about the culture behind the food."

[Esme hasn't left this building. In. Days.

She'd climb up to the rooftop to take in the fresh air, but that would be considered going outside, and she did give her word. So she takes walks - lots of walks.

It's her second time breezing through the common room today, and she sees something she hasn't seen before: a giant turtle. For a moment she's caught between her surprise at the obvious (that's..a giant turtle) and her relief that there's another person in here. The latter wins, of course (and besides, she knew not everyone here was human). She walks over to him, about to say something when she notices the writing - ooh, strange, unidentified writing. Distracted, all typical greetings are overlooked, and she ends up saying - ]

What language is that?

[He's distracted, barely processing that someone is speaking to him before answering absently.] Four languages, actually. Kanji, Greek, English, and something called Y'lyntian.

[His hand flies over the page, writing almost as fast as thought.] All together, they're really good for writing complex ideas succinctly.

And confidentially.

[She's not entirely sure how combining languages would be really good. Sure, sometimes multilingual people have a mash-up of languages come out in one sentence, but it's not necessarily the best, clearest way to communicate ideas.

Unless clarity isn't the goal.]

[You mistake Donatello for a person with normal intelligence. And a person who is actually secretive about his ideas. :| ]

Well, I guess that too, but I use it mostly because it's faster, Miss... [He glances up from his notes, then jerks in surprise. He doesn't know you. And you're really, really pretty.] Uh, do I know you, ma'am? [BRB, trying to figure out how to interact with a stranger.]

[Mike arches an eye ridge as he catches sight of Don, then immediately heads on over. He invades Don's personal space--yes, it's fine for him to invade, but not for Donny--and tries to read it. ... Darn, it's the shorthand again.]

Whatcha writin' about, Donny?

[If there had been emotion in that, it would've sounded like the old Mike.]

[Donny isn't even fazed by the space invasion. Mikey does it ALL THE TIME in this era.

Also, ha, you can't read it. Nyah nyah nyah.] Theories on the Mist. Having it right outside is doing a lot for research.

Why code it?

[Mikey from your time also asks a lot of questions.]

Because it's faster to write.

[You know how people develop shorthand to write notes during a lecture? Don needs that for his thoughts.]

And it gives me room to communicate especially complex ideas within maybe half a page.
