It pumps the water from river at night to the special lake above (this lake isn't seen in photos, it is behind the concrete wall) while during day it releases water from upper lake and works as ordinary hydro plant

I don't know exactly but it seems that even now they get some profit: it is possible to buy cheap energy at night and to sell it much more expensive at day
