The Italian signs in soviet Vilnius

Nov 25, 2009 17:20

Baroque era left many works of Italian architects in Vilnius and other parts of Lithuania. But could soviet era and particularly first post-WWII decade to leave Italian architect works here ? It is strange, but yes !

When Vladislovas Mikučianis arrived to Vilnius in 1945 and became chief architect of this city he was forced to invite a group of his friends from Leningrad to Vilnius. This was necessary since absolute majority architects from pre-WWII Lithuania and Vilnius area left the country and those very few remaining were very sceptic about Stalin's era neo-classicistic architecture.
Between those who arrived to Vilnius was young architect Giovanni Rippo-Angioleto. Son of Italian communists he arrived to the USSR in 1930s (probably with parents) and became architect in Leningrad. In Vilnius he lived from 1948 to 1954 and left here two buildings.

First of them is the former cinema "Pergalė" (1949-1952):

Another one is so called Scientists house (1950-1953). Because I don't have it's photo let me give the link to the friends Darriuss photo:

So even in the middle of XXth century Italian architect somehow managed to leave own footprint in the Vilnius architecture.
