Bird news

I saw a Wilson's warbler (tiny yellow bird) feeding a fledgling brown-headed cowbird twice its size this morning. I saw an adult brown headed cowbird later on in the day looking hungrily at bees flying in and out of our hives ( Read more... )

Sweet! Next year for sure, I gotta build some nest boxes. We have Purple Martins flying around here - not sure where they are nesting. The Cliff Swallows that have nested under the roof gable the last few years are doing it again, and the youngsters are getting increasingly loud.

Cowbirds get the same treatment around here as Starlings...

Syrup consumption has been increasing again, so I surmise the hummingbirds have fledged. Our Quail are still appearing in pairs, no chicks yet. A juvenile White-Tailed Kite appeared three weeks ago and has been hanging around, presumably learning how to hunt by watching the adult all day.

This is the first cowbird I've seen on our property. We are lucky enough not to have any starlings so far. I did evict an English sparrow from one of our bird boxes and then regretted it because it was the one (out of ten) that our seven year old built and put up.
