1) I think it is going the other way really, employers (as long as they give notice) have far more right to collect data without suspicion than gov't does; they've long used whatever datamining technology afforded to analyze employee behavior. I ended up helping filter phone logs in the mid 80s so the company owner could figure out who was spending all day talking.

2) Another reason to read Snowcrash. This is a practically a throwaway.

You know you can still use expired Groupons? You just don't get the discount when you do, but they are usable at face value.
