It was another lovely day out on New Vulcan - not that there had been any so far that hadn't been. The slight strangeness of walking down streets filled with (almost) nothing but straight-faced Vulcans had worn off, by now, and Leonard was enjoying the hustle and bustle taking place around him.
Especially since he was taking the puppy (who still didn't have a name, alas) for a walk, and watching her reactions to this new and stimulating environment, as she sniffed her way around on the farthest reaches of the extendable leash they'd found, was a joy in and of itself.
He was so focussed on her he almost missed the blur of dark fur darting in between people's feet.
The nameless puppy was suffering a strange division of her consciousness.
Half of her remembered cats, and was not threatened by them. Had, in fact, been rather worried about them hiding behind her wheels but enjoyed them perching on her hood. Cats were tiny and somewhat delicate, as all small creatures were.
But the part of her that was now puppy was both intrigued and utterly intimidated. She crouched back, flattening her ears but wagging her tail, a pose which had, thus far, pleased her people.
She would've missed it if not for the faint meow it made. As it was, Nora came across the black cat that ran across the sidewalk near her. "Hey, kitty," she said to the cat softly, leaning down to peer at it. "Where did you come from?" She'd always loved cats, even as a little girl. Her mother was allergic, so she hadn't been able to have one, but they'd liked her too.
"Aren't you an adorable thing," Nora said with a smile, and held out her hand for the cat to sniff. She wanted to stroke the soft-looking black fur, but it was probably best to wait for acknowledgement that such an action would be welcome. "Pretty, pretty."
Sam exited the Vulcan grocery and hurried back towards where he was staying. He hated being outside on the colony for too long. The heat to was too much; it did nothing but make him want to curl up and sleep. Crossing the street a few blocks from his destination, Sam caught a glimpse of something small and black.
A cat? He wouldn't have thought the Vulcans would have any affection for cats. They would probably feel they were above keeping pets.
Sam walked back towards the alley it had disappeared into.
Sam crouched down to get closer to the cat's level and set the bag of groceries down beside him. He held out his hand toward the cat, but not too much. If it wanted to come closer and sniff him, or to rub against him, he would let it, but Sam wasn't going to approach the cat any further.
"Hey, you," He said quietly. "What're you doing running around the streets, huh?"
