Stories that deal with a theme absence, either figuratively or literally.
A Long March ✩ ✩ ✩ Author: songbird Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: G Length: 8300 Summary: 'I'm to go to Rome,' Marcus said, when the messenger had been and gone, and Esca had brought Cub back into the house. Comment: Agonizingly angsty. Esca’s place was at Marcus’s side; with him gone, he doesn’t feel comfortable in the Aquila household anymore (and by extension, Calleva). While Esca waits he tries to keep busy, but his faith in Marcus’s return erodes as the months pass…there’s a feeling of bone-deep sadness to this story; first in the fact that Esca doesn’t know what to do with himself anymore (truly without a home and without a family, since Marcus left) and second in the fact that Esca can at first not even fathom the though that Marcus might not come back. [Spoiler (click to open)]And once he hears the news, he does what he always does…he moves on, no matter how much it hurts. I liked that the ending was not clearly predictable.
Ten Thousand Paces Author: Destina Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: M Length: 6500 Summary: Marcus wants Esca to be truly free, no matter what the cost may be for Marcus. Comment: Marcus, you noble fool! You see, he has everything figured out. Clearly, Esca only stays with him out of a sense of duty and obligation, as Marcus cannot yet rely on himself. There’s a possible solution in there somewhere…and Marcus is determined to give Esca the freedom he truly deserves.
The Long Season Author: Nahara Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 5600 Summary: Winter is a harsh time for Marcus. Every year it only gets harder. Comment: This story is so painful. Marcus can neither change Esca nor change his feelings for him; he is utterly helpless and at Esca's mercy. I liked the use of seasons as a metaphor.
Devotee Author: Piscaria Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 4200 Summary: A month has passed since Esca traveled north to Novantae to trade for some horses. Marcus tries to keep busy while he's gone. Comment: If the other stories in this category didn’t wreck you, this one certainly will. This dosage of angst and misery should be illegal!
In any fandom I’m especially fond of this category! There is almost nothing better than an outsider POV, if it’s well done. ^^
Almost Like A Son ✩ ✩ ✩ Author: ForzaDelDestino Type: Bookverse Pairing: Sassticca, M/E Rating: T Length: 3600 Summary: Sassticca has been a slave in old Aquila's villa for many years. She thought nothing would bring light and laughter into the place, until the Master's nephew, the crippled centurion Marcus Flavius, arrived. He has given the old man something to care about, as the new Briton slave, Esca, has helped Marcus to get back on his feet again. Comment: Very poignant. The monotonous peace of Sassticca’s existence is shattered when Marcu joins the Aquila household. She is almost desperately happy to have someone to care for and fret over. I loved that Sassticca was portrayed as a fully fleshed-out character, her depiction felt realistic and left me saddened. It’s clear that her affection for Marcus is disproportionate to the affection she gets in return; she leads her life in the shadows of others and even her maternal pride is second-hand and does not truly belong to her.
Fastened Down Author: Sineala Type: Movieverse Pairing: Placidus, M/E Rating: T Length: 2200 Summary: Placidus just wants Marcus Aquila to suffer horrible pain. How difficult can this possibly be? Comment: You know it’s going to be a good day when you see Placidus fume and whine.
Singularly Unobservant Author: Isis Type: Bookverse Pairing: Placidus, M/E Rating: M Length: 2200 Summary: Placidus observes an intimate moment. Comment: Placidus’s character is portrayed so well in all of its dubious glory - the contempt, raging envy, insecurities and secret longing.
Cub's Pack Author: Tronnie Type: Movieverse Pairing: Cub (!), M/E Rating: T Length: 1200 Summary: this is a little fic from Cub's POV regarding his two masters, Marcus and Esca. Comment: A canine POV is something you don’t see every day! It’s amusing to read Cub’s take on the pack dynamics.
Please forgive my pitiful attempts at Latin. ;-) I hope I used the right case. Hm. Does anyone else think that the guys on the left are getting pretty cozy? That is some deep, wine-fuelled soul-gazing, if you ask me.
This category is for stories in which Esca and Marcus find the courage to confess their feelings only with some external help - alcohol, love drugs, strip games, flimsy undercover missions, you name it!
Hetaeriae Eaeque Brevi Fient ✩ ✩ ✩ Author: Sineala Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 13 500 Summary: After the return of the Eagle, Rome is not done with Marcus Aquila. He and Esca are persuaded to infiltrate a group of potential conspirators -- possibly-traitorous men about whom there are yet other shameful rumors, stories of debauchery and vice. What do they get up to at their dinner-parties? To find out the truth, Marcus and Esca must pretend to be lovers, but it is a difficult thing to pretend to be what Marcus so badly wishes they could be in truth. (Or: Marcus and Esca go undercover as gay at an orgy. Comment: One of the most brilliant tropes in recent memory (really, what’s not to love?). The story is hot and light-hearted and manages to smuggle in a fair deal of characterization. I don’t really buy Esca’s motivations for agreeing to the whole thing, but you won’t see me complaining anytime soon.
An Ancient and Noble Game ✩ ✩ ✩ Author: Sineala Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 8200 Summary: Marcus and Esca play Never Have I Ever. Comment: Flirtatious and fun! Esca starts this game so cocky and self-assured - certain that he outwits Marcus with his little ruse and certain that Marcus doesn’t even have that much to tell. (Though if he is honest - he is so, so curious). As it turns out, Esca is wrong. On all accounts.
Toga Tumble Author: PlaneJane Type: Movieverse, Bookverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 4500 Summary: Written as a prompt fill from the_eagle_kink on Livejournal: Some post movie celebratory carousing with our boys enjoying lots of wine and attention. There is much catching each other's eye across the room, Marcus proud that free!Esca holds his own. They go home together, drunk, flop into a pile together on Marcus's bed. Half-asleep drunken groping that turns into more ensues. Comment: Marcus and Esca are both fun drunks! This means that you can expect a delightfully high level of mutual snarking and groping. I approve!
Raising the Stakes (The Following Ancient History Remix) Author: Sineala Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 3500 Summary: In an attempt to interest Esca in a game of latrunculi, Marcus suggests an unusual wager: the removal of clothing. The ensuing game is not quite what Marcus was prepared for. Comment: Strip latrunculi is the best kind of latrunculi! Treat it as a missing chapter of the history books.
The Banquet Author: linaerys Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: M Length: 3300 Summary: For the_eagle_kink prompt Marcus and Esca go to Rome post movie. They go to a big Roman party-slash-orgy and someone promptly slips something into Esca's wine. He's doped up and really friendly with Marcus, while Marcus is very sternly admonishing himself not to take advantage of him Comment: One of the few stories in which Marcus and Esca end up in Rome together, at least temporarily. I enjoyed seeing this option explored. (By the way, Rome’s notions of the “Briton barbarians” are about as cringe-worthy as can be expected.) At a celebratory banquet, Esca is drugged by a party guest, [Spoiler (click to open)]and ends up confessing his feelings to Marcus.. Though he is a willing participant in all that follows, the story could be considered dub con because of this.
The Potion Author: magog_83 Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: T Length: 3000 Summary: Written for the kinkmeme prompt 'After the Quest, Esca buys from a druid he knows near Calleva a magic potion. This special potion ensure that the drinker loses his inhibitions towards the person he is in love with. Esca thinks Marcus is in love with a girl but is too shy to declare his love. He wants more than anything else for his beloved friend and brother in arm to be happy, so he pours the potion in his drink, even if it tears at his heart. Comment: What a classic fanfiction trope! It’s like seeing an old acquaintance again. ;) You can see where this story goes from a mile off, but that doesn’t diminish its entertainment value.
Nothing of Greater Value (The Secret Latrunculi Master Cover) Author: Carmarthen Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 2900 Summary: Marcus and Esca are locked in a cellar! However shall they pass the time? Perhaps with a little game...(yes, this is a Roman Strip Poker story. I have apparently written fluffy bondage crackfic.). Comment: If I’m not mistaken, this is the first story in which strip latrunculi is utilized - one of the best things to come out of this fandom! As you can imagine, it’s ingenious and highly delightful.
tangerine sky Author: floatxxaway Type: n/a Pairing: M/E Rating: NC-17 Length: 2000 Summary: For the prompt: "So, one afternoon, our favourite happy gay farmers are returning home from a hard day's labour, and they have to go past a neighbouring farmer's field where the old crop stubble is being burnt back. The crop just happens to be hemp." Comment: I’m not quite certain if this is a realistic scenario, but in the end that hardly matters. Not when we have cannabis-induced, lazy, affectionate sexytimes! ;)
Told You So Author: Aramley Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: G Length: 520 Summary: Marcus samples the local brew. Extensively."
Cultural differences in Esca’s and Marcus’s upbringing are part of almost any story in this fandom - but in the following ones it’s the central element on which the plot is focused.
Untitled Author: temperance_k Type: n/a Pairing: M/E Rating: n/a Length: 3000 Summary: for the prompt: Marcus learns British (?) for Esca. IDK, I think Marcus would be like the sappiest boyfriend ever. Comment: Fantastically sweet and heart-warming. It’s fluffy and sappy and perfect! There’s a slight historical mistake (I don’t think Pictish was ever transcribed?) but as I’m no history buff I didn’t mind too much.
Surrender on Both Sides Author: Seascribe Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: M Length: 2100 Summary: Before Marcus, Latin has only ever meant hatred and ugliness for Esca. Comment: Beautiful. I like stories that explore the lasting impact of Roman culture on Esca’s mindset. It’s seems only natural that Esca would object to using Latin for the most intimate, defenseless moments…when his native tongue is so much closer to his heart. (Besides, I usually prefer seeing Esca as a bit embittered and resentful towards Roman culture. Not that he needs to outright hate all things Roman, I think he moved past that stage, but I cannot imagine him ever thinking of Latin as just another language, one among a hundreds others).
Beat of My Heart Author: Tronnie Type: n/a Pairing: M/E Rating: K Length: 1400 Summary: Marcus wants to learn something of Esca's language, so Esca teaches him some. Comment: Esca, you sly fox!
The Hazards of Codeswitching Author: Carmarthen Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: T Length: 100 Summary: Sometimes a very nice sentence in one language sounds a lot like a very rude sentence in another, as Esca finds to his chagrin.
I’m discovering my love for antique marble statues! The statue in the picture is called Sleeping Hermaphroditus and is exhibited in the Louvre. It depicts the son of Aphrodite and Hermes, who was originally male but morphed with a water nymph and became two-sexed. (You have to love Greek mythology!). I can’t get over the skillfulness of the sculptor. The mattress looks so soft!
Anyways! Back to business.
The Battle Line Author: Sineala Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 7300 Summary: After an encounter with soldiers at their farm leaves Esca unsettled, Marcus dons his old armor and offers himself up.. Comment: The scenario at the beginning of the story is uncomfortably realistic - the soldiers behave like assholes just because they can; they enjoy exerting their power over someone they perceive as their lesser. Esca’s subsequent meltdown doesn’t come as a surprise. Luckily, Marcus knows exactly how to improve his partner’s mood and give him what he at this moment: his complete and utter submission.
Who Should Give Law to Lovers? (Love Is a Greater Law to Itself) Author: Sineala Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 3800 Summary: Esca offers Marcus the chance to take command again. Comment: Yes, initiating therapeutic sex is one of the many talents of Esca. In other words: Marcus is a lucky bastard! (As you can guess, this story mirrors the concept of “The Battle Line”).
Lost In You Author: laylabinx Type: n/a Pairing: M/E Rating: NC-17 Length: 3800 Summary: Esca is a virgin, Marcus is not. First time fluff! Comment: This is an interesting deviation from the usual portrayal of Esca. Most of the times, Esca is portrayed as knowledgeable and confident, while Marcus has difficulties coming to terms with his wishes and desires. This depiction is probably due to 1. Marcus's obsession with honor and 2. the Roman portrayal of “barbarians” as uninhibited and shameless. I've been curious to see a different dynamic between them for a while, and this story doesn't disappoint.
Like Honey Plunged Into Water and the sequel, Sweeter Than Honey Author: Carmarthen Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 3100 Summary: Esca picks up some Egyptian fashion while the boys are doing unspecified (irrelevant) spy stuff. Marcus really, really likes it. Kinkmeme fill for "Esca in eyeliner, not AU" prompt. Comment: This story satisfies a kink I didn’t even know I had!
The Dagger Author: PlaneJane Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 2900 Summary: n response to the_eagle_kink prompt, here, Marcus shies away from sex with Esca, and Esca assumes it's his Roman pride getting in the way. The truth is Marcus has a small penis and he's afraid Esca will be turned off. Esca convinces him otherwise. Comment: I think Marcus could have tentacles instead of genitals and Esca would still be all over him... as it is, Esca is determined to prove to Marcus how unfounded his fears are. H/c!
The Fires and the Conscious Air Author: Sineala Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 2500 Summary: A storm causes Marcus and Esca to take shelter in a cave. I think you know what happens next. Comment: They make a campfire and try to warm themselves? They eat their rations? They...um, I don't know, sleep? I'm running out of ideas. What else could two young, fit, dripping wet men do in a cave...hmm...
Shameless Author: Piscaria Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 2000 Summary: Esca goads Marcus into a massage at Uncle Aquila's bath house. Comment: I think you know where this is going. ^^
All Good Things Author: Seascribe Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 1900 Summary: There is a new riding crop hanging unused in the stables. Esca waits for Marcus to ask for what he wants. Comment: Bonus points for the creative element!
Frontwards Author: retts Type: n/a Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 1900 Summary: prompt: I want Esca fucking Marcus against a wall! Comment: And a fuck against a wall it is.
The Making of Him Author: Verecunda Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: M Length: 1800 Summary: Every scar tells a story. Marcus wants to know what stories Esca's will tell. Comment: This is more of a character study than pr0n (I'm not complaining - it's a lovely exploration!)
Slow Fire Burn Author: Seascribe Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 1600 Summary: There is something that Esca wants to try. Comment: [Spoiler (click to open)]And that little something is rimming.
Save A Horse, Ride A Roman Author: amyfortuna Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 1600 Summary: Marcus dances for Esca. Comment: Or in other words: Marcus is well versed in the antique art form of the striptease.
Kiss Me, Take Me Author: savvierthanu Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 1400 Summary: Last part in a trio of kissing fics. Well, "kissing." Comment: Indeed, this is a very special kind of kissing.
The Hound's Centurion Author: Sineala Type: Bookverse Pairing: M/E Rating: G Length: 1200 Summary: "It is in my heart that it would be a great help to me, if I knew I could still be your hound." Comment: If Sutcliff had written role-play negotiation and enactment, this is exactly what it would look like!
His Centurion Author: riventhorn Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 1200 Summary: Written for a prompt at the_eagle_kink requesting Esca/Marcus with Marcus wearing his Roman uniform with the skirt Comment: Esca is entirely too delighted to call Marcus “Centurion” when Marcus is at his mery. ;)
Trust Author: lallyloo Type: Bookverse, Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: M Length: 1000 Summary: For the prompt: Breathplay. Esca really wants Marcus to choke him, but Marcus is afraid he'll hurt Esca. Comment: I don’t have a thing for BP, but dare I say that this works and is actually pretty sweet?
Untitled Author: floatxxaway Type: n/a Pairing: M/E Rating: NC-17 Length: 1000 Summary: set post-movie. for the prompt at the_eagle_kink: "I just really want some bottom!Marcus 'cause it seems to be lacking. I don't care how or why it happens, either."
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth Author: mercury_alice Type: n/a Pairing: M/E Rating: R Length: 700 Summary: Because, forgive him for being vulgar, but when the ex-centurion had said ‘You decide’, Esca’s mind went straight to the gutter. And Marcus was more than happy to follow him there.
Conciliation Author: wildestranger Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 530 Summary: Esca is rough with Marcus in ways he has not been with other lovers.
More Surely than Law Author: anon Type: n/a Pairing: M/E Rating: n/a Length: 500 Summary: Post-movie fic. Both men are heroes. Roman society closes in on them, lavishing them with praise and finery. Titled women want to bed them. Leaders want their support. Suddenly, they're in very high demand. But none of it means anything in their bedroom, when they tear off each other's new, fine clothes and revert back to Marcus being Esca's bound slave again.
Four Times Author: mistresscurvy Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 340 Summary: These are four unconnected ficlets that were inspired by this VERY NSFW edging porn.
Reversal Author: linaerys Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: n/a (E) Length: 340 Summary: Written for my latest Porn Paragraphathon. Prompt: edging.
Other Countries, Other Customs
Or in this case: Other provinces, other customs. The "teach me about your culture" - angle is one of the fandom’s most beloved tropes when it comes to PWPs. And with good reason!
If It Feels Good Do It (The Molliculi ac Parum Pudici Remix) Author: Sineala Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 5500 Summary: Esca has kissed people before. Only not on the mouth. Comment: Esca is so earnest and adorable and determined - suffice it to say that both he and Marcus learn the value of the other’s culture.
Bellaria Author: misspamela Type: MovieVerse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 4500 Summary: Virgin Marcus. Yes, that's the extent of the plot. Comment: The characterization is beautiful. (And no, that is not meant to be an euphemism!). I enjoyed the easy camaraderie, the insecurity, the slow exploration of what they are to each other…oh, and the pr0n is glorious as well. In case you wondered.
I Wrote Your Name for All to See Author: Sineala Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 3700 Summary: Marcus discovers what he truly wants. Comment: Not quite my kink, but written well.
Asking Author: Pouxin Type: n/a Pairing: M/E Rating: NC-17 Length: 2700 Summary: Esca finds out if you don't ask, you don't get. Basically shameless blowjob porn. Comment: A stunning trope reversal! Marcus is not nearly as shy or unskilled as Esca assumed. I love confident!Marcus.
Strong and Splendid and True Author: Sineala Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: T Length: 2500 Summary: Someone told Marcus that Britons don't kiss; Esca is determined to demonstrate otherwise. Comment: Sweet, hot AND hilarious! I love that Esca’s so sly.
Patience Author: Helenish Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 1800 Summary: “You could have been my slave,” Esca says once. Comment: Esca has fun with his little fantasy, while Marcus feels guilty for all the things he cannot give his lover. Intense, solemn and hopeful.
Pleasant-Tasting Are Strawberries And Your Lips Author: PlaneJane Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: G Length: 1600 Summary: Originally written and posted at here on the_eagle_kink, for carmarthen's prompt: Apparently the Romans were really big on kissing and kind of responsible for a lot of its European popularity. Esca thinks this Roman custom sounds very weird and not all that appealing; Marcus demonstrates otherwise. Comment: I can’t get enough of this little trope!
Hands Author: Sineala Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: T Length: 1400 Summary: Esca notices all the ways Romans touch people, and all the ways he wishes Marcus would. Comment: Lovely.
A Thousand and a Hundred More Author: Carmarthen Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: T Length: 1200 Summary: Esca is confused by this weird Roman custom of licking people's mouths, and asks Marcus to explain. Comment: Teaching Esca all about this custom is not exactly a hardship for Marcus.
Everything Author: nagaplz Type: Movieverse Pairing: M/E Rating: E Length: 900 Summary: A prompt fill from the_eagle_kink meme on LJ; Esca is perfectly willing to top from the bottom. Marcus is such a traditional Roman that he can't wrap his mind around this being possible much less the fact that he's involved in it. Esca finds this deeply, quietly hilarious, even as he bends his master to his will.
