Successful entrepreneurs, organizations and events all have a common trait: resilience. JAFAX proved this weekend that it is a resilient event and improves with each year's new iteration.
Yeah, I went through that whole thing of teaching myself how to spot bootlegs. I've gotten pretty damn good, however I still go through the dealer room with someone else, and we usualy spot alot more.
It sucks we have to deal with it, but I guess its just one more challenge con staff has to overcome.
Im glad the exclusivity thing didn't cause much of a problem. I still think its a bad idea, but hey, if they can get it to work, more power to them.
Arrr, matey, that be a bootleg!vudumanJune 27 2006, 20:59:47 UTC
I have had the plan to put together and share a bootleg-spotting guide on the Fast Food Anime site for a while. Once I pull together the quick-tip sheets and get all the information plunked onto my comp, I will probably get that hosted, linked and plugged. It'll be similar to the Pirate Anime FAQ, but shorter and more concise. It will deal primarily on CDs, DVDs, and assorted novelty items like wall scrolls and playing cards.
I'll be staying loyal to my Midwestern focus and the awesome peeps at AnimeIowa by going there. I sent in my paperwork a little while back, actually. As nice as it'd be to hit Otakon, Iowa's just gonna be more fun!

For a really quick tip: look for a copyright - © - symbol with an actual company name. Not just logos, but that actual copyright symbol is on legitimate items. Beware of the "produced by" symbol, which is a P inside a circle. It looks like the copyright one, but it's not. That copyright symbol tip will help in most things, from those cheap $2 laminate posters to fake DVD box sets.
