Back from Miami: Decision Time-Weather, fate, signs, UM, etc.

Well, I'm back from Miami. Pics are here if anyone wants to check them out. The first two rows are pics from the UM campus.

Honestly, the trip really didnt do much to change my mind. I kinda expected this. I was pretty underwhelmed with Miami and the University of Miami to be honest. First, the campus. It's nicely landscaped--there are lots of ( Read more... )

This is a huge decision, dude 77azkkr June 2 2007, 19:58:09 UTC
Let's cover the important stuff first. This life changing decision, as you call it, can wait. What did you think of Beckham nearly single-handedly kicking your boy's butts ? Still sore ? Well, I'll send you a cushion or something. HAHAHAHA

One British paper said that McClaren is either a genius for bringing him back or a moron for letting him go in the first place.

Now for the other stuff.

The campus is nice (a lake ?? Oh gawd !) and I like the photos. I was expecting to see one of you with Al Pacino's arm around you... "I'd like to introduce you to my liiiiiiiitle friend." :-)

From the way you've described them, I think you like Chicago the best. And it sounds the best. But if none of them blow you away, I would still try and visit San Diego. You never know. What is there to lose but a weekend ?

All the construction there means the future is bright. I think.

Actually it means the housing bubble just hasn't caught up with the construction backlog. A lot of new condo buildings are sitting nearly completely vacant, and tens of thousands more units are coming onto the market by the end of 2008.

Miami is a uniquely pathogenic housing market. Enjoy yourself.

this is only an issue if one is looking to buy. and in fact, you could make the argument that if you want to buy, and there is a ton of supply...well, great! you can live in an attractive place like miami and not have to pay a lot.

i for one dont plan to buy a house or condo anytime soon, so this won't really matter to me.

more importantly, the construction to me doesnt mean houses so much, but rather jobs. i really do think that miami--and the latin world for that matter, will really grow in the next 5-10 years. miami will become an even more important commercial center. and, this is especially the case with law firms. why? well, NYC is getting even more expensive to do business. latin american and other multi-national companies might look to do business elsewhere. where are the places that are cheaper? DC and Miami. so, i dont really see what the issue is.

hell, ive lived here in the bay area my whole life and ive been around booms and busts. it's just how it goes, no?

I suppose I'd prefer a boom-and-bust cycle here in Michigan, as opposite to the straight-to-hell economy we have. But if buying into an overpriced market discourages new homeownership, renting will become more expensive in time. If you find a place you like, maybe try negotiating a two-year lease in exchange for stable rent.
