Shufti, with one finger running along the screen, has been tackling the in-ter-net.

She hears a snigger from behind, and looks around to see Jack, laughing at her.

"Mom, do you have any idea what you're doing?"

"Yes I do, cheeky." Shufti says, ruffling his hair. "You get to mock my reading and computing when you can do your own laundry and cooking. Are you ready for school?"

"Yeah, can I have candy in my lunch box?" Jack asks.

"No, you can have a piece of candy when you get home." Shufti says. "That's the rules. Go and put your coat on, we're walking today."

"Why?" Jack asks, suddenly suspicious.

"Because I'm coming with you and I don't drive."

"Mom! I didn't flush that boy's head down the toilet!" Jack protests. "It was the other Jack!"

Shufti gives Jack a long look. She loves him to pieces, but school has brought out new and mischievous sides of him that she'd not expected.

"Well, that's why I'm coming with you." she says. "I consulted the in-ter-net, and I've decided to volunteer at your school."

Jack looks horrified. "Mom! Everyone'll think I'm a nerd if my mom helps at the school."

Shufti laughs. "You're definitely not a nerd. Don't worry, I'm not going to fuss over you. If you are behaving like you say, you have nothing to fear from me being there. If you're misbehaving, I want to keep an eye on you."

Jack can't think of an answer to that. But as they head towards the school, he's already plotting ways to put her off.
