I miss kill files

I used to love usenet.  The technology for connecting people and allowing them to talk has moved on quite a bit since then, but there was one thing that usenet had that I have rarely seen in it sucessors- the killfile.

Moderation caught on and moderation can be found everywhere, but the idea of the kill file was to my mind a more subtile social ( Read more... )

I still play on usenet occasionally, and my killfile is >25 years old :)

One community site that does an interesting combination of killfiling and moderation is Ravelry. You can block just someone's avatar with a green "disagree" avatar to remind you that this person drives you bugfuck and not to read them or to read them carefully and take a deep breath before you click reply, or you can ignore a user altogether. There is also moderation, light or nonexistent in some groups and heavy in others.
