A lot of schools have started de-acquisitioning process; first, because the art market was insane and the trustees were looking to make a quick buck to build that all-important baseball diamond; now, because the economic situation is dire and they are looking to bolster the endowment. Either way, this is wrong. The art collections held in public institutions and in institutions of higher learning cannot be underestimated for the importance of accessibility and enrichment. Once disbursed, they end up not as coherent collections but as pieces spread far and wide in private homes, not to be seen again for perhaps generations.

yes, i agree -- i also think this is wrong. given who their alumnae are, they should've been able to raise 10M (their current shortfall) in other ways.
