Okay.  The main ringtone on my cellphone used to be the Close Encounters of the Third Kind theme, not from any great love of the film (I've only seen it once) but because the Doctor Who theme wasn't available until recently and that was about the only sci-fi-themed ringtone I could put up with.  I use my cellphone as an alarm just about every day,

Every night I power off my laptop before going to bed and it makes this certain chimey sound. Youngest cat, Tucker, is always in the room with me, curled up in his bed. When he hears that sound, he's up and out of the bed, ready to go upstairs.

So yeah, cats definitely adapt to certain sounds.

I guess I'm lucky that Silver didn't demand breakfast. :P They do love routine!

My cats recognize my car engine. They only react when I pull in, and it really confused them the time the repair shop drove it back and I was home. :-)

Long ago, I read an article about a cat trainer. I can't remember the exact way he described cat logic and cause and effect, but it was along the lines of:
If they jump up on the cupboard, knock over the cans of cat food, get bonked on the head in the process, then get fed, they now think they have to jump on the cupboard, knock over the cans, get bonked on the head to get more.

Our old cat Rose would sit and stare at the heater register until the heater turned on. Because clearly staring at it eventually works.

It makes sense...it's just really limited.
