Please help!

I recently found out a friend of mine absolutely NEVER uses "OK" when writing. He always spells it out. He was so very opinionated about this I started to wonder if other people have strong opinions as well. I have strong opinions about word usage, but for whatever reason the OK/okay issue does not inspire me to passion.

So. Tell me!

I've never thought about it but I think I don't care. I am positive they don't sound any different.

OK makes me think of the gesture. I think O-TAY! pretty much every time I hear someone say either. I was just showing Chad how to make the proper gesture/facial expression the other day.

I spell it out because then I don't have to think about punctuation.

No preference, really. I even like some web words, like "srsly". My pet peeve is subject/verb agreement. Even college professors say things like, "There's lots of choices." I also get annoyed with "would of" and "could of" instead of "would have" or "could have".

But it's no use complaining; literacy as we knew it just quaint anymore.

I sometimes forget "kinda" isn't a real word. Sometimes it feels more accurate than "kind of". I mean, some things are "kind of" something but other things are just "kinda". Ya kno?

I use kinda and sorta all the time because I like transcripted speech, which is different from using the wrong word. My favorite writers-Burroughs and Twain spring to mind-are masters of that.

Oh, I know what really gets my goat: business speak. Impact as a verb. "There's lots of dynamic strategies we could opt into to impact our outcome in a positive way, strategy-wise." That's when I reach for my revolver.

"Alright" drives me crazy. It has a completely different meaning than "all right", or at least makes more sense than it. My mom (the writing professor), and I, had a huge discussion of it, although google seems to admit that it IS a word, if still one under debate.

according to ap style (which is used by almost every newspaper), it's OK. i haven't seen trib or nyt style for while - but ap is probably used by at least 90% of newspapers anyway. (it's possible individual papers would have adopted a style for OK that would trump AP style - but i'm thinking OK doesn't present an issue that would require this kind of exemption.) similarly, most magazines (not all though) use OK. books are all over the place.

which is a long way to say ... OK is more "officially" correct.
