Actually carving it was simple. The only part that was a little tricky was getting the orange peel off more or less completely intact. Even then, the oranges they send out here have really thick skins.
Basically, I cut a hole in both the top and bottom, so I could have a way to get at the orange from all angles, and cut a line down the back. If you look carefully through the eyes and mouth, you can see it. Then I peeled the whole thing, trying to leave what I had intact. I held the cut in back together with duct tape, but after it dried out it held its shape just fine on its own.
