Nucky
But as sure as God made black and white
What's done in the dark will be brought to the light

And take what you will tonight, I'll give it as fast And high as the flame will rise, Nucky, R (tw: two racial slurs, suicide references, and murder)

There are times you dream.

Not of the war memorial, or what came before that although when you wake your hand always hurts but you’re never sure if it’s from the fire poker or the gun shot that missed. Those things don’t enter your mind, like when June says Eli’s wrote and you never ask about what but simply cut the check, blot it and pass it along. Margaret seems to understand better than most and tugs Teddy and Emily, claiming a headache. You’re thankful for moments like that and can almost remember loving her.

And the nights you dream of her clutching your straight razor flee.

She would never. She doesn’t need you that much.

Emily still wakes up, crying. She mews like Jimmy did when the fever took him and Gillian of course wasn’t there because how could she risk losing him to the malaria. So it was you, sleeves rolled up humming something broken and tuneless because it wasn’t ( ... )

Gyp Rosetti
Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

Margaret & Emily

I will leave this to my daughter:
lift your head up in the wind.

Al/Gillian (bonus for Richard): "I come to offer my deepest condolences on your loss."

'Cause it's almost like your heaven's trying everything to break me down, Gillian, Al, Richard, PGGillian still sees Charles from time to time on the Boardwalk and that nervous energy that once made her knees buckle has stilled long enough that he doesn’t look guilty when she comes around. The Bankroll smiles when he sees her, every time like a naughty school boy with a secret, and turns back to point her out in a crowd to Luciano as if to give his blessing and the younger one- his son, maybe, just grins- full toothed and greedy to see him take the bait. Charles never does. There was a time not too long ago when he did ( ... )

You know what the sun's all about when the lights go out - Nucky, AR, Charlie, Meyer G

It’s a strange pantomime they’ve begun although neither of them can really recall why. Perhaps it started with Fallon, or after with Jimmy gone and it was much a quiet lesson to AR’s boys of never letting the past get in the way of the future as a sword of Damocles for them. But Rothstein started taking up a place behind Thompson, and Nucky allowed it. Sometimes AR will lean closer, whispering something into Nucky’s ear neither of his boys is privy to and the sea king will concede. The boys trust the Bankroll enough not to question although they wonder when they lost their place beside him.

Rothstein’s gone cold a little like he's wounded over something; with the Brook sold and Redstone stables shuttered up. Even Carolyn’s arrival home from France didn’t keep him from the closed door meetings with Thompson as if they shared some conspiracy. Or sin. He only lets Thompson in for the longest time and Charlie hears through the grapevine he’s even ( ... )
