These past years, this past year, she has been aging and growing. Increasing in authority and control. Knowing what she must do and doing it. Responsible, knowing, moral. As though the masked side of her is being brought slowly into the open. Like bare skin, gradually revealed into view. This truthfulness, this what she has always wanted of herself, she tells herself. What she has lied for.
He is dead. Her father is dead.
She is reduced to a child. The wild-mouthed mewling of a child desperate for a father to cling to, to hide behind. As long as he has been here, she has had a refuge, a retreat. And now everything is upon her. It loads her.
-
Guy doesn't realise. Not til he starts moving.
At first, all he is thinking is that she is here. That he is holding her. In his arms. At first, that is all.
And then his thoughts shift, flickering into half-formed thoughts and intents.
For a moment she seems to move towards him. Her head shifts sideways, her chest intoxicatingly closer, almost touching his. And then she is pushing at him. Shoving him away.
He hates himself for failing again.
-
The gentle softness of Robin's "shush," smoothes and soothes the screaming parts of her. As one would shush a mewling child. She doesn't want this. She doesn't want any of it.
Heroism is not a game anymore, a rebellion against father or threatening lover. All those sideways smirks, the costuming, the playing at fighting. She had been playing at adulthood, hadn't she? Side-stepping death. Running from the echoes of it, like fleeing from footfalls at the dark end of a corridor.
Head resting on his shoulder, she sees their arms against each other, his darker sun-dyed skin, hers paled by days spent in castle corridors. But their wrists are the same width.
She rests against him, stilled.
-
Guy walks away, footfalls echoing against the stone.
