“Bingo! Alright, you guys are in,” Mac said turning to look at Veronica and Keith Mars, who were sitting on the dark green sofa in the dimly lit office of Mars Investigations.

“Thanks Mac,” Veronica said, turning away from wiping some stray blood away from a gash on Keith’s forehead.

“I’m not speaking to you. Butters asked if he should rent a room for prom night. I’m doing this for your dad,” Mac muttered, doing her best to scowl at Veronica, before turning her attention to Keith. “Mr. Mars, what else can I do for you?”

Keith smiled as he watched Veronica and Mac “argue.” It was nice to see Veronica having some light-hearted fun for once. “You mind printing every e-mail, every document?”

Mac turned back to the pair, making sure to catch Veronica’s eyes as she said, “Your wish is my SHIFT COMMAND,” pausing for a minute, and realizing neither got it, so she continued, “Little computer humor for ya.” She finished, feeling a little uncomfortable.

Veronica could tell Mac was still a little annoyed with her over the whole “Butters” thing, but she couldn’t help snarking back, “I liked it better when you weren’t speaking to me.” With a smile, she shrugged at an irritated looking Mac, who just turned back to her laptop, ignoring Veronica’s comment.

Mac stared at her computer screen, trying to plot her revenge against, the very evil, very annoying Veronica Mars. The only problem she was having was that she couldn’t stay mad at her adorable blonde detective.

Almost laughing aloud at the absurdity that was her brain, Mac continued to print out Kendall Casablanca’s e-mails and documents.

Mac’s problem, if she was honest with herself wasn’t the fact that she had been tricked into going to her senior prom with Butters. Her problem was that she could never go with whom she really wanted to, for reasons to numerous to mention.

Keith was the one to interrupt Mac from her internal musings, “Hey Mac, I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that might take a while. If you want there is some soda in the fridge,” He said gesturing to the small room in the corner of Mars Investigations, “or there is some coffee brewing on the counter. Glasses are the fancy Styrofoam ones in the cupboard above.”

“Thanks Mr. Mars, it should only take another 15 minutes, and then I’ll be out of your hair.” Mac said as she stood and made her way to the fridge hidden in the far corner of the small room.

Mac was so lost in her debate between Mt. Dew and Coke that she jumped when she heard Veronica’s voice from behind her.

“I recommend the Dew, unless you’re trying to remove rust or destroy bones… If that’s your goal then I’d go for the Coke.”

Mac ignored Veronica’s suggestion and grabbed the nearest can of Coke. Popping the tab, she kicked the fridge shut with her foot and turned around to face Veronica.

“Ahh,” Veronica said, noticing Mac’s choice of soda, “So, who’s bones are you planning on destroying?”

Pondering the question briefly, Mac decided to continue their playful argument. “Yours, then Butters… then I’m going to run off to Mexico while Lamb ‘investigates’.” Mac said, smirking at Veronica.

“Butters is a… nice guy Mac. You should give him a chance.”

“I’m sure he is a ‘nice guy’ he’s just not who I wanted as my prom date.”

“Well then, who? Where you and Cassidy planning on working things out in the next week?” Veronica knew it was sort of a low blow, and kind of a touchy subject, but she was just sick of all of the prom talk, between Jackie and Wallace and now Mac, any mention of prom just made her want to run the other way.

“You know Veronica, you don’t need to know everything.” Mac said, raising her voice slightly. The tension was too much for her, and the walls seemed to be shrinking around them. “The files will make a noise when they are done. Call me if your dad needs anymore help with them.”

With that, Mac set her half drank can of soda on the counter, quickly moving around Veronica, she was downstairs and at her car before she knew it. Mac had only made it as far as putting the keys in the ignition before the tears started slowly falling from her eyes. This was stupid, she told herself, hitting the steering wheel with her fist. She would just go with Butters. Soon enough high school would be over and Veronica Mars would be out of her life.

That was the problem, though, wasn’t it, Mac thought to herself as she wiped the tears from her eyes, Veronica Mars, the amazing girl-detective, also known as Veronica Mars, first woman Cindy Mackenzie ever had a crush on. It was a startling discovery that happened about a year ago when she first saw the news reports of what happened in the woods with Veronica, Keith, and Aaron Echolls.

She had been so worried that she could barely get to sleep. It wasn’t until she finally dozed sometime after 4am, only to be awoken two hours later from a very hot, very passionate kiss with a dream Veronica that it dawned on her. She was in love with Veronica Mars.

Not that she would ever do anything about it. No, Mac was content to continue their harmless, friendly, flirting. Sometimes it became a little to frustrating, though. After the whole Pirate Ship case, and now with this prom thing, it was all just too much at once.

Veronica just stood by as Mac lost her cool and left. She had never seen Mac looking so stressed out before.

“Veronica, everything okay honey?” Keith asked, hearing the raised voices.

“I’m not really sure. Mac left.” Veronica said, trying to replay the conversation in her head to pinpoint what exactly went wrong.

“You should go downstairs and talk to her.”

“But…dad…I…she…” Veronica was interrupted as Keith yelled from his office, “Shut up and hurry Veronica. Listen to me for once.”

Completely confused from the last ten minutes, Veronica didn’t know what else to do, for once, other than listen to her dad.

Mac was startled from her thoughts at the sound of her passenger side door opening.

“Hey, glad I caught you,” Veronica said as she climbed in, closing the door. “Mac…you’re crying. I’m so sorry. Really. I didn’t mean for this whole, ‘you plus Butters plus prom’ thing to get so out of hand.” Veronica said trying to make things better.

Mac just stared at Veronica, trying to wipe away the tears from eyes.

“Aww, Mac...” Veronica said leaning closer to Mac, and wiping a few tears off her cheek. With her other hand Veronica grabbed Mac’s right hand off the steering wheel, quietly Veronica pulled it onto her lap, holding it. “Talk to me. Tell me what’s going on. Is it Cassidy, did he say something mean again?”

Mac was at a loss for words as Veronica held her hand, and used the other to cup her cheek wiping away her tears. “No, no, Cassidy hasn’t said anything. Just ignore me, okay?”

“Mac…who do you want to go to prom with?” Veronica asked remembering their previous conversation.

“No one, it’s nothing, just forget I said anything Veronica.”

“You haven’t actually said anything yet, Mac. Who is it?” Veronica kept pressing Mac, hoping to get the truth. Veronica wasn’t as dumb as some liked to believe, blonde yes, stupid, no. How did people think she ever got any cases solved? Veronica Mars was very good at reading between the lines, hearing the things people weren’t saying, rather than the things they were.

She had realized a long time ago that Mac had a crush on her. Most of the time she didn’t even think about it, until the incident with The Pirate Ship message board.

“I’m just curious,” Veronica had said, blushing as she realized her slip. However, was it really a slip? Veronica hadn’t given the idea too much thought until then.

Veronica was quick to solve other people’s problems, because solving her own was just a lot more complicated it seemed. With clients she could just break it down, make it simple, no emotions clouding her problem solving. With her own problems, though it seemed just the opposite.

It took Veronica Mars one week to realize she liked Mac. Seven whole days. Seems somewhat stupid in hindsight, but there was a lot for Veronica to think about. Did she always like girls? Did she only like Mac? Does she still like Logan? Was she just lonely?

In the end, she broke it down for herself with one simple question. “Given the circumstances, would you kiss Cindy Mackenzie, and would that be an enjoyable experience?” The minute Veronica had formed the question in her head she was surprised by the answer that came to her…

As Veronica sat in the car holding Mac’s hand, she suddenly remembered the question she had posed to herself a few months ago. There was one simple way to answer everything, she thought. With that in mind, Veronica gently squeezed Mac’s hand, causing her to turn and face Veronica.

Slowly Veronica moved towards Mac until their lips were inches apart. Veronica locked eyes with Mac, trying to ask all of the questions she had swirling in her mind.

Mac’s eyes slowly fluttered closed as Veronica gently brought her hand up to cup Mac’s cheek.

Finally giving in to the moment, Veronica lightly pressed her lips against Mac’s for the briefest of moments before pulling back, giving Mac a chance to run.

Feeling the loss of contact, Mac opened her eyes to see Veronica watching her, expecting something.

“Veronica…you just kissed me.” Mac said matter-of-factly.
“Mac…you just kissed me back.” Veronica added with a smirk.
“Didn’t have a chance to, you pulled away.”

Veronica quirked her eyebrow as if to question Mac’s statement, “Oh,” Veronica added, not sure what else to say.

Mac smiled as she leaned towards Veronica capturing her lips, this time neither pulling away. Mac wrapped her arms around Veronica’s neck, pulling her as close as she could in an attempt to deepen their kiss.

When they finally separated, Mac’s arms were still around Veronica’s neck, their foreheads resting against one another as they caught their breath.

“So…” Mac started.

“Well, I guess I was right. Questions answered.” Veronica smiled smugly to herself. “This may not be the best time, but, you know you still have to go to prom with Butters right?” Veronica said, hoping their kiss would soften Mac’s mood.

“Yeah, I know, otherwise there are detentions with our names on them every day until graduation.” Mac said, sighing.

“We’ll all be going as a group anyway. Plus I’m already reserving you for at least four dances and a grand escape after 10pm, what do ya say?” Veronica said, with a mischievous wink.

“Grand escape, huh? I’m so there,” Mac said, before leaning forward to capture Veronica’s lips in another heated kiss.
