Questions and Answers (Life and Politics)

In the spirit of continuing to clean off my desktop, here's a few rambling thoughts on current topics in life and politics. The last ramble was in response to a question I've seen posed a few places lately in various forms, including this thread at Making Light.

Questions and Answers, Specific and General )

(Really, who watches porn at work? Reads it, okay maybe and only at lunch, honest, but watches it? Ick.)

Um, so...someone I know (and I won't say whom, except that hopefully this story will not reflect badly on me because I can't help knowing him) lost his job for watching porn at work. Lost his very high-paying job. So yes, there are people out there dumb enough to do it.

That's all I can comment on, because I am not smart enough to talk about this stuff. :D

No bad reflections; I actually know someone who lost their job for the same reason, although it was a slightly different situation. I think the higher up you get the more invulnerable you feel. And the person I knew slid into another high power job so there you go. Maybe once you reach a certain level things like that slide off you rather than stick to you.

Andy why I get more squicked by the idea of people watching at work rather than reading I'm not sure. It might be a gender difference. As long as the work gets done, I don't really care what people do at work. Do your banking, e-mail your kid's teachers, order flowers for birthday gifts, make reservations for the weekend. But if you do anything connected to the Internet-- someone will find out.

I do think there's a difference. Written porn is just words on a page. Filmed porn involves, you know, people, and I'm one of those people who has problems with the treatment of women in the porn industry so I do find it squicky. Ah well.

We had an email go out at work that we weren't supposed to read actual books at our personal desks, even on our breaks - because like two or three people were being stupid and just sitting and reading all day and not working, and leaving their work to others. So of course it's easy to punish everyone than just deal with them. Anyway, I laughed when my supervisor told us that "that email isn't addressed to our department, even though it was sent out to everyone; we all work." Later that day I walked by her office and she was totally just sitting there, reading a book. ♥
