It just seems hard to understand wtf he is talking about - we basically have a barren desert but he spends page upon page talking about some ridge, rock formation, crevice, passage, etc. Ie he clearly had an idea of what he was describing, but to me it made no sense. If the landscape was more like a city or a forest, I think my imagination would connect better. Of course, in a computer game / movie these issues are solved by the set designer :)
Re Star Wars - DUDE! Empire, evil emperor, sand desert, family ties (Barron was his grandfather), star troopers = sadukars. Of all science fiction (granted I know little), I can't think of another book that would seem to have more influence on SW.
You are right, though these are somewhat superficial elements. Apparently in the original drafts, there were even more similarities: http://www.moongadget.com/origins/dune.html
BTW, from my memory, the mechanics of controlling worms were explained fairly well - at least I still remember them after all these years (granted, my 15 year old self had much better long-term memory retention).
I think they hooked segments of the worm open to expose them to sand. The worm would then stay on the surface to avoid this. By opening up sections on the sides they got it to turn where they wanted.
