i don't know how one can go to a quality school and not take out loans (assuming parents don't pay of course). To me it's a basic timing problem - as a student you are short on money, but if you graduate and have a normal job, you'll likely have it. So it makes sense to borrow (especially when rates were low)
What if you are not a "Hi-Tec, Law, Med" etc. student? You don't get a "job" so to speak straight out of college. You can only teach and those positions are extremely limited and poorly paid. What are the options?
I hate to sound crude - but isn't that something one ought to think about before choosing a career path? First generAtion immigrants usually go into money making businesses - precisely because they don't have the parents' safety net. Bohemians are usually children of rich ppl for a reason :)
That's just the state of human condition - most people either have to do something they don't love (but make money) or do something they love (but make no money at it). The overlap between enjoy work AND make money is probably very, very small - those people are lucky. On the other hand - the reason jobs that people love pay little money is precisely because a lot of people want to do them for no pay. That's supply/demand :)
