Hee- that's a good picture. Did you have a rafting guide or did you just go with friends or something? I've been rafting a couple of times as well - great fun.
They gave us a 20 minute "here's the many ways you can die on the river. Here's some suggestions on avoiding it. Do this to make the boat move" and we went out. No guide in the boat, but there were guides going down the river with us; they were alongside in kayaks:)
Wow - I don't think I would have felt comfortable doing that! I guess it depends on the river you're on. We did the Ottawa river that has some serious rapids and rocks. There's no way we could run it without a guide. Lucky for me, my guide was cute, lol and he designated me 'second in command'. Ah, the perks! :D
This was class 3 rapids. About half the people fell out :) (counting me!)
I was ok with it; I've been canoeing on rivers since I was 4, so understand (and I'm good at) the different strokes. I can read a river very too.
We put the guy in the back who is next to me in charge. He was crap at directing and I took over... it turned into a running joke. Whatever I would say, he would respond in a drill Sargent voice "delay that order! [says the original order as if it's his own]" but in a funny way!
The rapid that I shut up on and let him steer is the one I fell out on becasue he swung the boat, backwards, into a hydrolic!
