White Collar is reliable in the sense that they're sort of bound to keep the Neal/Peter dynamic going. So it's obvious Neal won't leave and that the longer the season goes on, the more the reality of leaving is going to weigh on him and he won't do it. The fun of the show, to me, is just watching how they play all that out, how the characters interact, and the cases.
I'd honestly be surprised if "Neal Caffrey" was his real name, if that whole thing about his dad being a dirty cop was true. I doubt he'd want to be connected to a name that was no doubt splashed across newspapers, let alone the emotional baggage he obviously has for it.
Beside that, Peter didn't know that he hadn't graduated from high school (or gone to college), which would have been easy enough to determine if they had his real name, and definitely something they would have tried to find out early on.
