I work for an "Enterprise Content Management" company and I should know :) . The way we do it is to put information about the content ("meta-data") in the database, and the content itself in a filesystem. The best of both worlds, eh?
Not quite. But what matters is that we put in the right marketing terminology. You could never sell your file-system-with-locking mechanism for millions of dollars. :)
