Earlier this week, four children were thrown off the Dauphin Island Bridge in Alabama by their father. At this time, two of their bodies have been found.

CNN's coverage of this wretchedly horrible event includes a video link halfway through the story that reads, I KID YOU NOT, 'Watch the Mother Grieve'.

Every time I think that the media cannot surprise me, they DO. That is unspeakable.

I completely agree. It's moments like this when I feel genuinely ashamed to work in the media.

The sensationalism, commercialism and fear-mongering that the media passes off as news these days is mind-boggling. It's strange to think that the news wasn't always like this, because I'm too young to remember the days when reportage was an art, not a means to an end -- advertising revenue. As you noted, this kind of thing can make one ashamed of working for the media. But I resigned from the Lobo over X-mas break, so mine's just post-employment guilt now. But, you can bet that their exploitation of human suffering will increase their ad revenue and ratings. Grrr ...
