Snickers Super Bowl Web site promotes violence against gays and lesbians. Bears & Colts players react in disgust, on camera, to gays.

Umm yeah... I'm not touching a Snickers bar - or any candy from the Mars Corporation (including M&Ms, Twix and more) for a very long fucking time.

UPDATE
It appears as though the web site has been pulled. This was ( Read more... )

I saw that commercial. I thought it was super dumb. I had no idea about all the alternate endings... that's just sick. Especially the whole "I'd rather drink motor oil than kiss another man" bullshit.

But don't you see how it's better to poison your body with toxic chemicals? To cause possible permanent damage? To do something irrevocably stupid in the name of "saving face" and buying into homophobia?!

Oh you poor silly woman with your logic. When will you learn?

When I watched the commercial I thought that Snickers' message was that homo*phobia* makes you do stupid things. This other perspective hadn't even occurred to me.

However, while the player-commentary just makes me sad I don't know what else to expect from the most testosterone-driven sport in the US.

Ditto. I've seen all the ads, and it mostly seems to me that it's poking fun at homophobic meatheads, rather than 'promoting violence against gays.'

The player reactions are disappointing though.

For some reason, I can't see the general public being "deep" enough to find a meaning like that in a Superbowl add...

I thought so as well. The victims in the joke are homophobes, not gay men. The ad looked stupid to me, but I didn't see it as advocating homophobia. The 'phobes in the ad were neither smart, nor rich, nor good looking, nor lucky; they didn't represent a role model.

Showing football players demonstrating disgust at men kissing is different; I don't think there was any malice intended, but that campaign is actually supporting homophobia, however mildly.

I'll pretend to boycott M&M/Mars products if it will make my friends feel better. I cannot remember the last time I bought one of their products. If I can't afford good chocolate, I'm a hershey's man myself; I like the blue-collar look. Mostly, I prefer to bake.

Wow... just... wow. Wow.
Yeah. I think they should fire whoever let that get out of development.
