"You sure you want to do this?" asked Don for the hundredth time. Only now it wasn't really like they could turn back. They were already parked in front of his parent's house and the car was off and every now and then Truly swore she could see his mother fluttered the kitchen drapes as she looked out of the window. Truly swallowed and let go of a breath nodding her head as she looked over at Don. He grinned at her and squeezed her hand before opening the car door and climbing out. Truly waited a moment, taking another deep breath before doing the same as Don, stepping into the cold winter air.
She stopped next to Don in the doorway, looking over at him and giving him a nervous grin which he returned, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and giving her a quick hug. They broke apart as the door opened and Don's mother and father stood in the door way. Somehow actually seeing them made Truly more nervous, and she cracked out another nervous grin.
"Donnie!" said Rosa excitedly, reaching out and pulling Don into a hug. Truly stood to the side awkwardly as he said hello to his parents, then turning and looking at her.
"This is Truly," he said gesturing her to come in. Truly grinned meekly and stepped in, reaching out and taking hold of Don's sleeve as soon as she got close enough. Rosa Flack looked her up and down before giving her a smile.
"You are skin and bones, honey. You should come around more often and I'll give you a decent meal," Don grinned at his mom and the two were ushered into the house, Truly still a bit uncertain.
"It's nice to meet you, Mrs. Flack," said Truly as steadily as she could.
"Please, call me Rosa," She said, patting Truly's arm softly. Don had walked off some time ago with his dad, leaving the two women standing in the hallway with an awkward silence hanging overhead.
Then as if like a sign from heaven something in the kitchen dinged.
"Oh, thank god," muttered Truly under her breath as Rosa left Truly alone in the hall by herself. If she listened really hard, she could hear Don and his dad talking and laughing and acting like a virtually normal family. Truly sighed and swallowed heavily before walking down the hall and spotting both Don's sitting on the couch. Don looked over at her and his grin widened some.
Rosa shouted at her husband and son to wash up of dinner and gave Truly a wink as she set a casserole on the table and bid her to wash up and come back.
In the hallway Truly passed Don and a wave of nausea swept over her.
"I can’t do this," she said quietly, dropping her head into her hand and closing her eyes tightly.
"Yeah, yah can," whispered Don, hesitating before reaching out and patting Truly’s shoulder.
.
Don was beginning to regret his statement as Truly fidgeted all through dinner, her hands were shaking so badly that Don actually had to tell her to breath slower. Finally it came that Truly couldn’t even sit still, and Don thought that maybe they should just get it over with so that she could go home.
"We have to talk," said Don, looking at his parents nervously. Rosa pretended to look surprised and Don Sr. looked as relieved as Truly did now that the tension was gone.
"What about?" asked Rosa, false curiosity forming on her face making Truly smirk as she was reminded of Don being sarcastic.
"Truly’s pregnant," said Don quietly, watching the curiosity fall from his mother’s face and being replaced by a blank stare.
Rosa sat up straight in her chair and looked at her husband who was wearing a shocked expression on his face as well. Truly felt a weight fall off her shoulder’s and she let out a breath she hadn’t known she’d been holding. Don looked over at her and saw her relax just a bit.
"Have you set a date?" Don and Truly both wiped their heads towards Don Sr.
"A date for what?" asked Truly nervously, trying to grin and failing. Don Sr. looked over at her then gave Rosa a look.
"A date for the wedding," said Rosa, tilting her head to the side and giving Don a pressing look.
"We’re not getting married," said Truly, the hint of a laugh in her voice. Don looked over at her and Truly’s face went blank as she realized what Don was talking about earlier. Rosa looked at her son and he looked away.
"Don," Don flinched at his dad’s tone and avoided looking him in the eye. "Donald look at me."
"Maybe I should wait by your car," muttered Truly into Don’s ear, scooting back her chair.
"Yeah, I won’t be too long," Don muttered back.
"Don’t make her stand out there in the cold!" said Rosa, there was a bit of venom in her voice as she looked at Don almost accusingly. Truly paused, halfway out of her seat and looked over at Don who shrugged.
"You didn’t ask her?" asked Don Sr. Looking at Don, who sputtered, looking over at Truly for help.
"I don’t want to get married-"
"You don’t have to make excuses for him, honey," interrupted Rosa, looking at Truly sympathetically. Her mouth was hanging open in mid sentence and slowly closed. Don groaned inwardly, hoping that Truly didn’t chew out his mother.
"I’m not," said Truly, both Don and Rosa flinched at her tone and watched as she stood up, giving Don a look and saying a quiet good bye, turning on her heal and walking out of the dinning room. Don Sr. looked at his son with an amused look on his face.
"She has you whipped, doesn’t she?"
.
Don walked out of his parents house about twenty minutes later, shaking his head as he walked up to Truly who was leaning against the hood of his car texting someone on her phone. She looked up as he got closer and stashed her phone away, closing the space between them and looking his face over.
"Did I get you into trouble?"
"No, mom’s just disappointed."
"What about you’re dad?" Don smirked at her, but cleared his face quickly.
"He thinks you’re amusing," Truly shook her head and sighed, placing her hands on his chest gently.
"They know that this is you’re choice?" Don nodded, his face serious. He pulled away from Truly and gave her a half hearted grin, walking around to the other side of his car and peering at her over the top.
"You want me to drive you home?" he asked and Truly nodded, giving him a grin.
"This could have been so much worse."
"How so?"
"They could have been happy for us."
