Friends, I was linked to the most amazing thing this morning. I can only hope you will be as delighted as I was. See, anti-choicers seem to be even more off the rails than I had suspected; if you know me at all you know this must be pretty impressive.

It is.

Kevin Swanson is amazing.

I blame religion almost entirely, and it ISN'T a stretch. The comfort part of religion - helping one deal with the scary unknown - is fine, so long as what you're dealing with really is the unknown. When you persist in treating proven science as the unknown and relying on outdated notions of submitting to non-scientists for your information, however, you're just being willfully stupid. (Which is fine, too ... until you start trying to get laws passed to support your stupidity.)

I used to think that I didn't mind whatever stupid crap people wanted to believe unless it affected someone else, but I'm no longer sure it's even possible for it not to at all. As I say, I think a certain way of thinking when large numbers of people do it informs the zeitgeist, not to mention, as Dawkins points out, moderate religion is a gateway drug to extremism and helps insulate it from criticism.

Bringing it full circle, I think you can say the same of bigotry: most people who could be described as sexists aren't serial-rapist monsters, and individually aren't actually doing much harm at all - purely as isolated incidents, writing comments on the Internet which, say, fuel rape culture aren't really doing much harm - but lots of people behaving like that almost certainly makes the production of said monsters, and every bit of horrible behaviour on the spectrum between shitty comments and serial rape, a hell of a lot more likely by creating a certain zeitgeist.

(sorry for dragging this off into kind of irrelevance, Ash)

Yeah, I know it's rooted in awful misogyny, but all I can do is laugh. And laugh, and laugh, and laugh.

Does this mean I can take some paid time off for bereavement? Think my manager and HR will buy it?

"But there's a tiny graveyard of dead babies in my uterus!" *sob sob*
