Iowa, we were so proud of you. Now two Republican state reps have proposed to EXCLUDE LGBT kids from the Safe Schools law that protects kids from harassment and bullying. What. The. Fuck. It's right here: the bill itself.

What bothers me more is the utter lack of news coverage. It's all on the blogs. Come on, Iowa ( Read more... )

Oh, I don't doubt it for a second. I used to be one of the people who tries to be really generous and broad-minded and treat Christianity like it's mostly great folk with the same percentage of assholes that every group has to deal with.

Eventually I decided that it isn't my job to decide who represents "real" Christianity, and if Christians aren't arguing with people like this and immediately kicking them out of the club in stark horror at the damage they do to our culture... it's not my job to do their PR cleanup for them. I'll applaud the denominations that do this--and they exist, and there've been similar ones with other civil rights movements--but the overall religion as a cultural movement is kind of a monster right now.

I posted a link to this one on FaceBook a few days ago but not on LJ. While there may be a subtle distinction between "Excluding LGBTQ children from protection against bullying" and "Legally declaring open season on the gay kids", I don't see it. If you're the type who wants to teach your children to beat up gay kids, the Republican Party is for you.

PS: Currently reading "Republican Gomorrah" by Max Blumenthal. You'd like it. Not only shows that the Palinist GOP is evil, but that their motives for legislating against allegedly "deviant" behavior really do pretty much stem from their own urges towards the same behavior and their need for Daddy to tell them they've been bad. Don't ever buy the fiction that the big liberal cities contain all the "deviants"; the rural conservatives do it twice as much, and because they feel guilty about it they end up much more likely to hurt others and get hurt in the process.

Kids are the most vulnerable group when it comes to multiple issues, and it's shameful that anyone supports excluding some of them from a protection. So now, the bully can say, "S/he's gay, so I wasn't doing nothin' wrong" and get away with it?? Ugh.
