Eunsook was never a fan of coffee. She loved the smell of freshly ground coffee beans but beyond that, she disliked the bitter taste, the stain it left on her teeth until she brushed them again. And the worse part of it all?
Eunsook needed coffee to keep herself awake on the nights she crammed for a test, and on the mornings she was just too tired to function.
On campus there was a small coffee stand that the athletic club ran during the off-season. Eunsook's dorm was vacant of a coffee maker and a regular cup of brew was free, so she frequented the stand - especially during mid-terms. She didn't pay attention to much when she visited (mostly because she was too zombiefied to notice a train running her over), but this morning when she went particularly early, she definitely noticed the guy on the other side of the counter.
"Good morning, nuna," he said softly as he started to fix a cup of regular coffee. "Finals today?"
Eunsook blinked stupidly; had she ever talked to this guy before? Seen him? She quickly racked her brain but nothing came up and she must've had a really dumb look on her face because the guy chuckled and handed her the steaming cup of coffee.
"Nuna, you're gonna be late."
She checked her watch and sure enough, her first exam was in ten minutes.
"T-Thank you!" she took the coffee and secured the lid (sometimes she forgot, and that was a disaster), before darting off towards class, where she probably got a B on her test due to her thoughts wandering to a certain big-eyed, soft-smiled boy.
--
"You always come around when you're stressed with stuff," the boy explained the following morning when Eunsook returned (and this time she made sure she had time to spare).
She blushed and fidgeted with her scarf, keeping her gaze on the counter.
"S-sorry I didn't recognize you..."
Minho laughed and shrugged, "I'm the coffee guy. I'm used to people coming here with blinders on."
Eunsook smiled and tucked her long black hair behind an ear; "I'll pay attention from now on."
--
True to her word, Eunsook started paying attention from then on. She learned Minho was captain of the baseball team and the coffee stand was his responsibility in the off-season from 10pm to 6am. He liked his job - he was good at it. He was well-educated in the world of coffee, knowing about a certain blend at the blink of an eye He liked rich, strong coffee with hints of sweetness, though he didn't drink it a lot because caffeine could hinder his athletic ability.
Eunsook also learned that she'd been getting coffee from Minho for six months.
"You're cute when you're all groggy and tapped out, though," Minho had said once when she apologized (again) for not noticing him.
She spilled her coffee al over the counter.
--
Eventually Eunsook just started spending her free time at the coffee stand. She would study there upon Minho's suggestion ("you won't have to sleep walk here anymore"), and sometimes she would help him with his homework as well.
Her sleeping schedule got pretty messed up but neither of them noticed because they had fallen into their own routine.
One night, Eunsook fell asleep on her couch, Hamlet open on her chest, rising and falling with her breaths. She woke up when the sun hit her face; she stretched, rubbed her eyes, then glanced at the clock.
She tripped over the coffee table.
--
By the time she got to the coffee stand it was nine o'clock and some girl she had never seen before was handing out coffee to students.
"E-excuse me," Eunsook stuttered, scarf covering her chin from the cold, hair sticking up in a few directions.
"Plain coffee?" the girl asked, already pouring it.
"I - yes... um, but-"
"Minho said you'd be here right about now," the girl said, smiling prettily.
Eunsook blinked stupidly.
"He left this," the girl slid a piece of paper to Eunsook, pretty manicured nails pointing to the neat scrawl. "He said to tell you to stop by his dorm after your last class."
Eunsook spilled her coffee (and the girl merely said "he said that would happen, too"), apologizing profusely and cleaning it up with napkins.
--
She found the dorm that matched the number on the paper, and stood frozen on the threshold. Eunsook may lack a few common sense instincts but she knew she liked Minho. She liked the handsome, quiet guy that knew her without speaking too much, she liked the guy with the deep eyes and the cute smile and the quiet laughter.
Eunsook liked the guy that didn't laugh at her awkwardness or clumsiness.
And yet before she headed over, she had ripped through her wardrobe to find something, ANYTHING that wouldn't make her look like a loser.
She decided on jeans and a plain blue sweater with a matching bow in her straight, black hair.
"Please be the right dorm," she mumbled almost pitifully under her breath, before knocking.
The door opened a few seconds later and Minho smiled at her like he always did, inviting her inside. She took off her boots and gave the place a cursory look; it was tidy, but sparse.
"I was thinking," he said as he moved into the kitchen and gestured for Eunsook to follow. "You obviously don't like coffee."
Eunsook flinched and rubbed her arm, "I like it enough..."
Minho chuckled "Have you ever thought about getting flavored coffee?"
Eunsook's hip ran into the kitchen table.
"N-No..."
"Here," Minho handed a plastic cup to Eunsook, that same familiar smile on his face.
Eunsook took the cup and examined the caramel-colored contents, before taking a taste. The coffee flavor was still apparent but... caramel and whipped cream overpowered it. It was cold and blended and it danced on her tastebuds pleasantly.
"This is good," she said, and blushed when she realized how awe-struck she sounded.
"Caramel frappuccino," Minho said. "I figured you don't like sticky-sweet stuff, that you like a subtle but strong flavor."
She glanced up at Minho with wide eyes, the flavors dancing on her tongue, and she briefly thought that if Minho was a coffee, he'd have a subtle but strong flavor as well.
"How do you know?" she asked.
His eyes crinkled in the corners with his smile, as his fingers gently tipped Eunsook's chin up, his lips brushing over hers softly.
"Because I bet you taste like frappe-flavored kisses."
Eunsook spilled her drink. They took their time wiping their shirts clean.
