Key leaned against the counter and stared at the cupboards that he had re-stained earlier that day when they had a break in their schedule. He held a cold bowl of ice cream in his hands, vanilla with caramel syrup, the perfect treat to end a stifling hot day as the sun set and eased the world into a warm evening.
Again, Key couldn’t sleep.
Again, he was breaking their diet and he was probably going to get fat at this rate, since he’d moved on from cereal to ice cream.
It was a leap.
He took a bite of the treat; he rolled the flavor around on his tongue, the caramel standing out on top of the light vanilla. It was simple, the combination of vanilla and caramel, but it was one that never failed to alight Key’s taste buds. It was simple and it was perfect and it was just what Key wanted in life - for things to be simple, yet tasteful.
Not everything about the Almighty Key was flashy and bright.
His fingers were a bit sticky from the fight with the tub of ice cream, the lid almost having won the battle if Key hadn’t used his spoon to pry it off. He had instantly changed the temperature of the freezer, because beef with freezer burn would not be acceptable in his kitchen. He licked at his fingers idly between bites, eyes trained on the cupboards, his mind replaying the events of that day.
Of sending off Taemin to his last day of school before summer vacation armed with a home-made lunch.
Of preparing Jinki’s usual morning cup of coffee and leaning over his shoulder to catch the highlights in that day’s newspaper.
Of handing Minho his freshly cleaned Dream Team jersey, sending him off with a smile and a ‘hwaiting!’.
Of washing Jonghyun’s favorite hoodie and handing it to him, the singer smiling and putting it on instantly and going to sit on the couch and zone out on the television until they had to start to get ready.
Today had been a good day.
But that didn’t explain why Key couldn’t sleep, why he was once again staring at those cupboards like they held the meaning of life for the second night in a row.
He heard the shuffling this time, glancing over to see Minho rubbing his eyes tiredly, the only light in the entire dorm being the small light above the oven. It bathed both rappers in a soft golden glow, shadows dancing over their bodies as Minho moved forward and leaned against the counter next to Key.
Wordlessly, Key held his bowl towards Minho, who grabbed the spoon and took a bite of the ice cream, before handing it back. They both stared at the cupboards for a few moments, before Minho broke the silence.
“They look good.”
Key smiled lightly, his mind drifting to when he was staining them earlier that day. He was sure that they were never going to get done, what with Jinki insisting that he be in the kitchen every ten minutes for who knows what reason, Jonghyun peering over Key’s shoulder and asking if he could help with anything, Taemin complaining about the fumes and how he was going to start hallucinating. Minho, then, had sat down next to Key and took a brush, starting on the next cupboard.
Even now, side by side, the two rappers didn’t need words to convey their point to each other.
Chuckling, Key rested his head on Minho’s shoulder for the briefest of moments, “Yeah, they do.”
He felt Minho press a kiss to his head and Key let his eyes flutter shut for the briefest of moments before he brought another bite of ice cream to his mouth. He got another spoonful and pulled himself away to hold it up to Minho’s mouth, the slightly younger boy taking it with a chuckle and a smile.
They finished the bowl of ice cream together, and Key rinsed the dish and put it in the dishwasher.
That night, they both went back to bed, Key sliding in next to Minho as the other wrapped his arms tightly around Key, cuddling him close as the diva seemed to fit just perfectly in the crook of his neck and the curve of his body.
Tomorrow would be a good day, too.
