As rebecca says, Magical girls, homoerotic subtext and villain monolgues are a must!!! seriously!! Don't forget also, that murpheys law always applys. If anything bad can happen, it will.

The gender benders, cute side sicks, and fangirls are also a must. Even if the fangirls are random people in the audiance, anime wouldn't be anime without the horribly annoying fandom.

There are small things like talking animals, weird color hair, and odd races (elves, halflings, demons, etc.) that you can get away with not having, but, would it really be anime without it? No.. not it would not.

And yes; yes There really is always robots.

p.s. new fad... MUST ALWAYS HAVE NINJAS, SHINOBIS..... OR SOMETHING VERY ASIAN. ^___^ LIKE CALLING A SWORD A KATANA.. EVEN IF IT IS A BROAD SWORD.
