Mi Patrón is getting impatient with me, so I need to sign off and go to bed, but before I did I had to say one thing. I finally got to hear Johnny Weir's acceptance speech for the HRC Visibility award. It was great; I wish the sound had been better so I could have heard more of his jokes, but he sounded, as he always does, so polished and ( Read more... )

He is really smart, actually. He's a huge Russophile, so he taught himself the Cyrillic alphabet when he was six or seven, then taught himself to speak Russian as a teenager, so he could talk more directly with his Russian coaches. He also speaks French and a little Japanese and Korean. The press conference he gave in Vancouver, when he was trashed by two radio reporters (they said he needed to take a gender test, and that he should skate with the women,) was eloquence itself. He got a lot of positive press for "grace under pressure" and his reasoned, measured response to guys who were really being jerks.

As you can probably tell, I'm a huge fan. I think he's pretty amazing. ^_^

I think some of Mr. Brad Goreski rubbed off on him the last time he was in L.A.
Love the double entendre here whether it was meant or not. ;)

Oh, it was definitely meant, but I also know that Brad is taken with a capital "T" (I think I read somewhere that he's been with his bf for nine years.) So the double part of the double entendre has to remain a fantasy. ^_~

He needs to always work with whoever styled him for this event (hair, make-up, clothes, everything). He looks FANTASTIC.

And the speech! So smart and funny and charming.

There's the baby face I fell in love with. I feel like I waited so many years to see him in a suit. I don't count some of those other instances. They did not fulfill my Johnny Is A Classy Bitch, No Really fantasies quite like this does...

So, I watched his speech this morning and cried tears of happiness. I just got back from listening to Karl Rove speak at Oberlin and I cried tears of anger. See my journal for more info...

You know, I've seen actors and actresses his age, those groomed by big public relations companies, fall apart or look stony stiff when doing on-air televised interviews or a speech like this. And here he is, an athlete with little media grooming, manouvering Jay Leno and delivering charming speeches like someone who's been doing this for years. It's really kind of a talent. If only he could have his own talk show...
