To answer your questions about "friends": when you add someone as a friend, that's pretty much exactly equivalent to following them on tumblr. They get an email saying that you've done so, and any post of theirs that you have permission to see shows up on your friendslist thereafter.
The biggest differences between tumblr and LJ in terms of friends and following has to do with that "permission" business: LJ lets you specify who-all gets to see a post. The default security levels are "everyone", "friends only", and "private". (You don't want to mess with "custom" yet, probably? I used to use it a lot, because I have trust issues. I'll happily walk you through if/when you decide you want it.) Everyone means anyone on the internet can see it. "Friends only" means only people you call a friend can see it (people you've chosen to have on your friendslist/dash). "Private" means you're the only one who can see it. (Custom lets you set up subgroups of friends. If you've got people you trust to see some things but not others

Yes! I think so. So when you say "friends only" your posts only display to the people YOU follow, rather than everyone who follows you?
And, sorry, one more--these communities, like the one emma grant just set up "tumblr_refuge" or the sherlockbbc one (or maybe there are acd ones too)--what's that all about?
It's Violet's very blue dress! (I presume. I still haven't seen any Granada, other than Blue Carbuncle.)
Yes! Friends-only posts are for people YOU call friends -- people YOU follow -- and whether someone follows you has nothing to do with it.
Communities. The closest tumblr-equivalent would be following a tag? Except a community is a LOT more deliberate and organized.
So, you know how your account, violethuntress, has posts associated with it, and people who follow your account can see the posts you make?
A community, in many ways, is like an account that many people can make posts to. And then anyone who is "watching" that community will see all the posts made to that community: they all show up on your friendlist, even if the individual who posted to that community zirself isn't on your friendlist
( ... )
One correction: LJ may no longer be sending "$user friended you!" notifications? I never got one when you friended me, anyway. They may be doing those notifications in some other way now, not sure, sorry.
And one note: until a few hours ago, tumblr-refuge had an incorrect "join here" link in that one public post of theirs. That was a link for watching, not joining. (It's since been corrected.) Since they're doing everything members-only, you'll need to click the revised version of that link (or click "join" on their user-info page) to be able to see anything that's going on there. (They've got a half-dozen members-only posts already, the last I saw.) btw, they're doing "moderated" membership, which means that the joining process will look a little different than it did when you joined bbcsherlock: your join request will go to a mod, and then the mod clicks yay or nay.
Hi! Welcome to LJ! *waves* I really liked some of your posts on Tumblr (as opposed to many annoying things which have kept popping up on my dashboard), so I'm very pleased you've now decided to give LJ a try to.
Hi!! I was also inspired to come over here after seeing so many people decamping from Tumblr. All the comments on this thread are so incredibly helpful. If you want some solidarity with another person who's very confused interacting on LJ... :-)

Here's an ACD Holmes friending post from a few months back.
