Second Heartbeats
She's standing at the Statue of Hachiko, knowing that this is where everything began and that this is where everything begins again.
She stands with her true friends, her true family, the ones that she had been separated from for so long, and she's never been so happy, she knows.
She's never been so happy to see Beat trying to show off his skateboarding skills and swearing like crazy when he's laughed at when he does something wrong.
She's never been so happy to see Neku's smile and his lips forming words that are no longer quiet and make him feel isolated, never been so happy to see his ears--because they're visible, not covered by headphones to drown them out.
She's never been so happy to see Shiki, the real Shiki, with her glasses and her stuffed animal and her dark hair and the fact that she's standing close to them with no fear of being judged in any way.
And she knows there's someone missing, but it can't be helped, and so she's never been so happy to see moments of silence given--because those moments of silence give that person to speak and be forgiven, for that person to still be a part of their lives despite all that has been said and done.
She's never been so happy to see a place with no weapons, no pins, no tools used for blackmailing the ones closest to her.
She's never been so happy to be free, never been so happy to have the chance to feel alive.
(And she doesn't have any dreams anymore, doesn't have any plans for the future.
And she's not so happy about that, but it's all right, really, she thinks--because all that matters right now and all that will matter for forever is the steady and calm rhythms of all of their heartbeats.)
